2019 Donation Drive

It's time for our annual Server Donation Drive! We need to raise at least $650 (same as last year) to keep The Cauldron's server online for another year. Please help! Either hit that Paypal button to the right and make a one-time donation in any amount or set up a monthly Bronze, Silver or Gold Donor subscription. You can find more info in this message!

Donations as of 16 Sept 2019: $660 donated. $10 more our minimum goal! Let's beat last year's total of $99 more than the minimum!

Note: This total is updated manually, usually once a day

* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Feleling a connection to the star Sirius
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:38:08 am »
So the constellation Canis Major has been outside my front door for about a week (maybe more, but I started noticing it about a week ago) and whenever I look up at it I feel nostalgic and happy, almost as if I'm seeing an old friend, who I've lost a close friendship with, but am still happy for them and their success in life.

Any thoughts on these feelings and is there a way I can explore them more?

Thanks!

I say run with it. I made a conscious decision to "adopt a star" as a sort of patron when I chose my pagan name (Altair). Thankfully its one of the few stars I can reliably find, and looking up at it on a summer night helps me feel connected to the larger universe. Sirius might do the same for you.

Admittedly, having a guiding star is a wildly romanticized notion, but hey, every once in a while we've got to give in to wild romanticism!

Two quotes to help you build that connection:

Quote
“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
― the late astronomer Carl Sagan, in the nature series Cosmos; the idea was later recycled in pop culture in a quote from Ambassador Delenn on the TV space opera series Babylon 5 (someone in the Cauldron, I forget who, uses the Delenn quote as their signature line)

...and from cheesy pop culture, but I've always liked the line anyway:
Quote
"To succeed, we need only pick a star and follow it."
--George Clooney as Bruce Wayne in Batman and Robin

Hope that helps.

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

One thing I just realized is that I have been obsessed with the wolf for most of my life. Could that passion/obsession for wolves (really canines in general) be connected to how I'm feeling with Sirius?

I know for me one can not look to Sirius without looking into the stories of the Dogon People.  The stories dealing with the Son of Sirius and the fact these nomadic people knew of it long before it was discovered by science just strikes me as interesting.  Even the ritual they have for when Sirius is closest to the Earth and the head dress that goes along with it just adds to the interst for me.

You could look for information on deities associated with the star Sirius.  I know that in the Kemetic pantheon the goddess Sopdet (Sirius) was considered a form of either Aset or Hethert.  She heralded the New Year and the Nile Flood.
I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset

Seems likely. I'm big on birds, which is why I picked Altair (which means "the flying eagle" and is in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle).
