Do my beliefs fit into any path/religion?
« on: December 02, 2011, 10:10:51 pm »
I have been interested in Paganism and Earth Centered Spirituality for a little while now. I understand that nobody can really tell you the path to take, but do my beliefs fit into any known Pagan path/s?

Some of my personal beliefs include:

*Soft Polytheism
*Every living being has a soul
*The soul is eternal
*Karma
*Reincarnation
*Concept of Free Will
*Each individual is responsible for their wrongful thoughts and deeds.
*Reverence for Nature and the wider Universe
*Animism

It sounds fairly Wiccish.  You might want to look into some branches of Wicca and see what you think of them.  The Goddess/God duality is in some ways a form of Soft Polytheism when you look at the "all gods are one god, all goddesses one goddess" mentality, and the "Three-fold law (or "Law of Return)" both fits in with the "responsible for their wrongful thoughts and deeds" and is in some ways is a Karmic law as well.  Although, granted it usually takes the form of the kind of "pop-Karma" where things can come back to you at any time, rather than the true sense of Karma wherein you are reaping rewards and atoning for wrongdoings FROM PAST LIVES.

But yeah, I'd say that a lot of what you listed can fit in with a variety of different paths.  The Soft Polytheism might not gel well with some Recons, but there are lots of groups that hold to that.

If any of that didn't make any sense, it's because it's late.  Tell me if I need to explain something better.

I agree with you that neoPagan/Wiccish conceptions of karma are often superficial, Westernized, and show little comprehension of its meaning in the Eastern philosophies it's part of.  But so is your definition.

I agree with Fagan in that it sounds like it fits most reasonably with Wicca. I share most of those beliefs and am Wiccan. The only one I don't really believe in totally is Karma, except in the Wiccan form of the threefold rule. If you want to find out more about Wicca to try and see if you like it, I would read Elen Hawke's In the Circle. Very good introduction book, I really can't fault it! Aside from that, in my own personal experience as a beginner Wiccan, is that I try to worry less about where I fit and have sort of developed my own path.

Lots of great insight in the replies to your question, and I think the advice quoted above is probably some of the best you will ever get.

These beliefs could cover a wide spectrum self-defined as Paganism. Eclectisim, which has been suggested, is a term taken from an ancient Greek philosophical movement, where each philosopher studied as widely and respectfully as possible and brought the best of what he found to incorporate into an unique personal philosophy. That principle has been applied to numerous personal wisdom walks self-defined as Paganism.

P.S. Depends on who you speak to but based on what I have been taught, the Religion of Witchcraft that became known as Wicca was and is hard polytheism. A distinct pantheon known as the Gods of Wicca lies at its core. In newer book-derived traditions not linked to the original trads, soft polytheism may be found. For some Pagans, the all-gods-are-one however smacks of monotheism. (I come from a Feminine Divine Only faith so that gets thrown at us a lot). Essentially there is a wide range of what soft polytheism can cover and where it is practiced. Just wanted to note that as if you go looking in that religion, please don't expect to find that universally.  While what was stated earlier might reflect the experiences of some, all-in-one is not associated with much of the Religion of Wicca.
