Divination to find your patron/matron deities?
« on: May 23, 2013, 02:30:45 am »
Does anybody know if there are any ways through Divination to find out who your patron and matron deities are? I've tried meditating and I've got nothing, I've asked for signs and I haven't received any, I've asked them to come into my dreams, no dreams. The thing is however I don't have any idea which pantheon to look at, I've done quite a bit of research over the last year or so and I still don't identify with a pantheon.

Does anybody have any inventive ways to go about finding them?

Do you mind if I ask what you mean by a patron or matron deity, and what having one means to you? Those terms get used in a lot of different ways, and knowing your answer will make it easier to suggest options for you.

For example, some people are of the opinion that a patron deity is one who comes to you, rather than you seeking them out. Often patron relationships are quite intense and ask a lot of the follower. Quite a lot of people believe that most or all people aren't meant to have patron relationships. Are you thinking of an intense 1-on-1 human-god relationship? Or are you simply looking for a god and goddess to call on during ritual?

Sorry, I should have elaborated further in my previous post. By patron/matron I mean a god or goddess whom I have a connection with whom I can call on during rituals and be in a way, kind of a guide or protector. I'm not looking for an intense 1-1 thing or a god-slave relationship or anything like that, it's most definatley not my thing.

Well, you don't necessarily have to honor an entire pantheon. Are there any specific deities you're drawn to? If so, you could always ask them for their help and guidance.

Also, just FYI, goddesses are patrons too. I wouldn't refer to, say, Venus as a matron. ;)

As previously stated -patron deities are of either gender, matrons are something entirely different. Also, having a patron is not the god-slave thing some people think it is - it's more a focused connection where they are the prime ones you work with/honor.

It's also a two-way street - your patron will ask things of you above and beyond what most people are willing to give.

I'd suggest picking one or two that appeal to you and just taking it slow -devotionals, meditations, general honoring - let them decide if they want the relationship to be more - and that could be on many levels below god-slave.

Some of us have them, and as stated - they chose us, not the other way around. Even having one or two doesn't mean you can't work with others as well, so it's not the total 'ownership' thing that others might say it is.

Hope that helps.

Sometimes they have always been around. Other times, yes divination can help. For me, I didn't have to go looking, a certain group of gods and goddesses have been around for long time. I'm almost at the point where I want to say, don't seek them out. Because it's tough somedays.

My suggestion is to start with your heritage. Read up on various pantheons and see if any appeal to you. Then do some mediation about the pantheons you find yourself drawn to. From there, you can always chose a god or goddess that you would like to honor. You can always ask for their protection.
