If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Beginner and already called by the Gods ?
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:42:49 am »
Hello dear friends!
I am a newbie pagan, living in the far away land of Bulgaria. I have seriously started researching paganism, because I feel that this is the spirituality that fits me best. However I have not yet decided on a specific image of the female and male aspects of the Divine.
Today I received a revelation. I awakened in the morning, the sun was shining very bright and I heard a female voice saying "Veles". After that I saw horns in my mind.
And then I realized that this may be a calling of the Slavs, the peoples who founded Bulgaria along with the Bulgars. The Gods of my ancestors are calling for me.
Can this be true?
The Slavs and the Bulgars lived in peace, they had different pagan beliefs but united to form Danube Bulgaria. The other two lands of the Bulgars have also been influnced by the traditional Bulgar paganism.

But the Slavic Gods called me. Why was Veles whispered by a female voice ? And what does the horns visualise? Yarilo ?
I would very much like your opinion.

There's some speculation that Veles, Triglav, and a few other Slavic deities may actually have been depicted with horns at one point. Masculine, vital, passionate energies and all that. Triglav often "appears to me" with horns, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

You don't necessarily need to be of Slavic descent for the Slavic deities to call to you. I would suggest looking further into those deities and seeing where it leads you. :)

Thank you, Laveth. Any specific advice on how best to approach this matter? This is the first time that I am having an encounter with a Deity that has an image that I can relate to.

You already have an edge that a lot of people here don't, a relevant first language. ^^

There is a lot of folklore already floating around out there, you've actually probably read/heard a bit of it already. And there are several books/websites that focus on the deities themselves. I would start there, spend some time thinking about what Veles means to you, how you interpret him and what associations you draw with him (if there are any beyond the basic knowledge), and just go from there. The more energy you put into it, the more you'll get out of it and it tends to become a self-perpetuating cycle.

I contributed a somewhat-lengthy post of (english) resources in another thread here, you could see if you find anything of worth there. But there are at least 30x as many resources in Polish, Serbian, Slovenian, Croatian, etc... floating around out there, so you may well be able to find something more pointed nearer to home. :)

My first thought on the horns would be simply that Veles is known for tending cattle.

Thought you might want to see this. I'm not particularly sure of its validity (mostly because it doesn't touch on my deities, and I'm not as well versed in some of those mentioned here), but if you scroll down and look at the image of Veles in the link- he is horned. And it talks a bit about his association as Lord of Animals, his alternate form being of a bull, etc...

Thank you both. I will start learning the theory and practise so that I can connect with the old Gods

Hello! Laveth is right, you have quite an advantage over a lot of us. ;) That's exciting that you got such a specific directive. In terms of research, that other thread should get you off to a good start. There have been two or three discussions including Veles lately; all of a sudden it seems Slavic deities are getting some attention.

It's been my understanding that Veles sometimes appears with horns because he's associated with cattle, though I've seen others that say he's not traditionally depicted that way. Seems like it might still be a matter of debate?

Thank you, Jack, for your answer as well. I am very happy that I was called by a Slavic God. This onetime experience has truly changed my way of thought. It helped provoke my spirituality even further. I am glad that this online commmunity has the knowledge to aid me.
Thank you both again.
I will do some detailed research on the spirituality of the ancestors. I would like to blog about them in the near future.

Oddly enough, and this may be way out of the park of what you're looking at right now, I've been really interested in the masculine horn symbols as of late. And prior to now, I've never given it a second thought. Expect a blog update on that later on once I get through my reading material, but if you can't wait here's a link to the book I bought recently that I'm working my way through on top of some other projects.

Oooh, looks like I already own that on the Kindle. I'll kick it up to the top of my To Read pile. :)

I'm thinking that's because we who live in this modern age most likely need different clues to get us to think of certain associations and of specific deities, as opposed to the people living in the times of living traditions.

(I got a very strong visual of a god strange to me donning horns, saying "MOO!", saying "think of cattle!" and muttering "kids these days..." )
