Herbology and herbalisim sites?
« on: July 05, 2011, 01:24:29 pm »
Does any one know of any sites for getting herbs for practicing medicine or for planting a garden?

Something I want to work on for the sake of myself and my family. (I dont really like how people tack up $400 medical(Pharmaceutical) bills every month because of over priced medicine that force you into getting more to counter act the side effects of...and so on perpetually)

This is a decent site for information http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/11570.cfm

If you're planning to apply any herbal treatments or ingest them always be sure to triple check side effects and remember that if you have particular medical conditions, medication, or dietary restrictions that may impact the way your body metabolizes the item.

OK  did  a  google search and this site, I`ve  had a  quick look at the site and they  seem to be  ok, just remember this is just  suggestion  that I found doing a google  search I`ve  not actually  used  the sites to order so I can not  vouch for them. As with  any  new site  like this to order  products online I`d suggest doing a minimal  order ( $10.00 or the minimal  order)  to see  if they are  trust  worthy.

Mountain Rose herbs
A site  where you can  order  seeds, they also have a link to order a free  catalog, I put in  for a free  catalog, seems they   have  only  U.S  states listed  but I  just  put  my  province and  country in the  city  line and left the  pick a state drop  down  box to  select one.

I've used Richters with good success for both plants and seeds.  They're in Canada, but also ship to the US.

I love   The Herb Stop.  They're a small chain based here in Arizona, with locations throughout the south west.  But I believe they can ship anywhere in the USA.

I really like their philosophy and can personally vouch for the quality of their herbs.

Full disclosure:  I've met the owner of the company and I took a year long herbalism course from the owner of the Phoenix store (who has since gone independant.)  I actually considered getting a franchise myself for awhile.

This site is interesting. It has some useful info and lots of entries. But it's not the best. Although it does have some traditional uses if you're into that.

I think I've seen more recs on TC for them than for any other supplier.  I know Jenett and Owl have both dealt with them (because I made a note of it when I bookmarked it, ages back), and I'm pretty certain others have spoken well of them as well.

They have a very solid rep among herbalists in general - Frontier can also be good, but is designed for wholesale sales, while Mountain Rose cheerfully sells to anyone (well, anyone who wants at least an ounce of whatever.)

I bookmarked a few things from here. Awesome! Especially the interactions one. Nice!

I am looking into the plants myself.  Still, by far the best resource I have found about plant medicinal qualities is not a website but a small Field Guide to Medicinal Wild Plants by Bradford Angier. It has uses for all parts of a plant, warnings, lore, growing tips and other characteristics of a plant. I found it my local library. It's a decent starting place for a direction and then further research online is a little easier b/c I already know the plant I want to investigate. I wish it were online, but the Google books preview of it is much older version and very different.
