Working with The Morrigan
« on: February 16, 2013, 05:09:56 am »
A thread I started last month piqued my interest for the Morrigan. I've been researching her since. I find her really interesting and can't help but wonder if She's calling to me a little bit. That's how I usually end up worshiping deities.

Anyway, I was thinking of perhaps approaching Her to suggest that we try working together for a month and see how it pans out. Only one problem.. She scares me a little bit! :( I feel kinda silly for it as I honour Sekhmet, who's somewhat known for her temper!

I don't know, there's just something about Her that makes Her feel unapproachable to me. However my interest is so strong and I don't want to give up! (I'm stubborn ^^')
So what I would really like to know is, what is She like to work with?

For me, she's very straightforward and isn't cute and cuddly.  Having said that, she's willing to work with with my reservations/hangups as long as I'm making a sincere effort at dealing and overcoming them to become a better person from it all.  She calls a spade a spade, so if you're not afraid to have Her in your face telling you point blank about what may need work on, I think you'd do alright. Morrigan, for me, is there to help shed light on the dark corners of my life. It took awhile for me to come forward to Her as I wasn't sure if I wanted her to get in to all those dark places and help me deal with them all-She insists on dealing with things headon already!  I'm glad I took that jump :) What I've learned so far from Morrigan is that she wants those She calls to have Sovereingty over themselves first.  She doesn't want us to give it awy easly to others nor have others get it without earning it!

Keep on learning more about Morrigan and perhaps start off with offerings etc til you're 100% sure you want to have a closer relationship.  She'll respect you for knowing yourself and wanting to wait til you're willing to go full force in what that will entail.

Hoping this helps! ;)

I was somewhat intimidated by her too at first I'll admit, so don't feel bad! XD
She's quite straight forward in Her dealings with me and I find that She'll often hang back and wait to see what I'm up to before coming forward to deal with me. She's not rash so it could take a while before She fully responds I think.
I would maybe set aside a candle for her and maybe an offering and see how things go from there :) She's intimidating but great for people who are trying to gain control of their lives- Sovereignty if you will!
She's great for people who find themselves needing strength and anytime I've needed a bit of extra courage She has been fantastic. She looks after Her own.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. :)

I agree with Cág 100% there. If you're going to try to work with Morrighan, you need to make an honest effort. You might not get anything from her at first, but you need to keep at it. The reason for this is, as far as I can tell, that she is very proud. You will get a lot out of a relationship with her, but she demands a lot in return. Being persistent and showing that you are committed it the best way to show that you are worth each other's time. As PhantomQueen said:

This is very, very true. Working with Morrighan can be difficult, but it is well worth it!

She seems like a very no nonsense kind of lady, I like it! ;) I'm trying at the moment to become a stronger person - taking control of work, love life etc. I'm hoping that the decisions that I make will have a positive impact. I do like the idea of working with a deity who can shine light on such difficult decisions. By the sounds of it She definitely knows her own mind. She also sounds like She is very rewarding to work with. ^^

I've dug out a book of Celtic myths and I've just reached some stories featuring Morrigan, I'm hoping they'll help me to learn more about her. You can only get so much from reading encyclopedia entries! I'm thinking about getting a plain black candle to light in her honour; nothing fancy, just something nice and discreet. =)

It helped a great deal, thank you! ^__^

Quite a few people have said that about her; that she's quite blunt. I've also heard that She's not the most subtle of deities! Fair enough, I know some deities are more reticent than others. Yeah I'm thinking of just getting a nice, plain black candle - nothing too showy. What would you recommend for offerings?

Definitely could do with more of both- especially at the moment! She sounds like a real pleasure to work with, scary but worth it. ^^

Thank you. Will do. :)

That's how I started out with Her! XD
Now She has a shrine with multiple candles, a little offering bowl, statue, etc XD :P

She is very blunt! She's a little like me! XD XD Her way of getting my attention was practically roaring "Hello?! I'm over here you eejit!" XD

At the moment I have some water in the offering bowl (Washer at the Ford reference), but I offer juice to Her too (She's fond of red juice) and sometimes some bread. Simple offerings seem to work well :)

Great minds think alike, 'ey? ;) Wow, wish I had room for that! The deities I honour are all shacked up together on the same table. XD

Me too! Haha just got the mental image of Morrigan jumping up and down, waving her arms. x3 Gotta admit that makes her seem rather less intimidating. =P

There's some good ideas there, thank you. Would never have thought to reference the Washer of the Ford. Red juice makes sense, Sehkmet might get a lil' jealous though. ;)

Oh my altar and shrine are all on a small table! I keep my main altar on a box! XD Check for the altars and Morrighan shrine picture threads and you'll see some pictures of mine (although I've added a few small bits and pieces recently). I have to keep my stuff fairly compact as I'm a student who moves about to different accommodation :) I think my Morrigan shrine is three quarters of a foot wide, if even that :)

I could only mention my own personal experiences&gnosis which may differ from others, so ultimately I'd go with your own interpretations.

I will say that aside from her more known roles, she is a designation of the Gaelic land/mother-Goddess, and any Irish mother-goddess can be pretty frightening when it comes to defending their own tuatha. Not only that but in times of war&famine they were who human sacrifices were offered to. An Mhór-Ríoghain moreso takes upon the role of a war-goddess (still not very pleasant) than a "death"-goddess. Her associations with death in mythology revolve around predicting fate, and in her crow iconography specifically among the war dead, and instigating battle. Therefore I wouldn't be intimated by the "death" imagery, but if anything the idea of her not afraid to cripple even the ones she favours. (talk about tough love!)

I'm sure you can gather an impression from what others have shared, and I'll say personally when I took an oath to her my life definitely took another direction. Aside from the Wiccan gods An Mhór-Ríoghain is really the only deity I could have those oaths of service to in this point of my life. Not only because of room, but there's a real sense of loyalty that I've always felt that came with it.

I agree with Micheál. :)

When I took my oath to Her my life did feel like it changed- but for the better!
Aye, the death imagery kinda comes with the package of being associated with war and battles for sovereignty XD
She's certainly not afraid to drop you in it if She thinks you need it! Oftentimes I've found that She'll step back suddenly but that I find then I can handle whatever situation by myself and that I just needed a little kick from Her to do so :)

I've converted the top of my small chest of drawers. Thinking of buying another small table but I'm not sure as my room isn't all that big. ^^; I'll take a look-see at that those threads, might give me some ideas. :) Me too. I'm not a student, but I moved out last year and my new room is quite a bit smaller than my old one. Which is fair enough as out of the three of us I have the least stuff. Not sure how big my shrine is - but it's fairly compact.

I can see her as being quite sarcastic, not sure why. Can just see her rolling her eyes going 'well done genius'!

She is very similar. :) Like Morrigan She's also a fiery, protective war goddess. Although, unlike Morrigan who seems to work in the background influencing events, She's very much in the thick of it doing quite a bit of damage. She also has other aspects, such as mother and healer/patron of doctors. Some people choose to honour her combined with other deities but I like to work with Her as is. She also likes her booze. ;)

That's really helped me to understand her nature more. Seeing her as a protective mother-goddess makes a lot of sense, especially from what other people have said about her. She is scary, I definitely would not want to cross her!
Sometimes we all need a bit of tough love. I know I have times where I need an extra big nudge, or have someone cast an objective critical eye over decisions I've made.
With her function as a sorcerer and prophet, I was considering dedicating my usage of tarot cards to her. Kind of like how I dedicate consuming some foods to Demeter- a true domestic goddess. ;)
It was never really her association with death that scared me. I didn't know much about Her, so I mainly knew of Her aggressive side. That's what scared me, but reading what people have said about Her has helped me to form a much more well-rounded view of Her.

I can, it's been so helpful! :) That last bit of the paragraph makes me smile as that's how I feel about the main deities I work with.
