I think it's that I see me doing my duty as a member of a household and a family, supporting myself and being able to repay debts, as well as keep up my end of the bargain with my covenant with the gods (making sacrifices and offerings in repayment) puts me firmly in the realm of "doing what's right", and that's what feels good.

I'm working toward this, in that I try to ensure everything I do upholds ma'at.

"But, Maps." They said. "That's so mundane." They said. ;)

I do think some people get the idea that being "connected" means feeling something spiritual that's removed from their everyday lives. Rather than the everyday life being the source of what's spiritual. What you said here is right on; you pay your bills out of obligation, an obligation to something bigger, something bigger being the fabric of it all. It is the reason behind everyday life and it informs your everyday life. You can't seperate things as "this is for god and this for myself, this for my spirit and this for my body" (to paraphrase Gibran).

Another thing, too, is that I still feel heathen and "connected" even when I'm blah or agnostic. Pre-Christian worshippers weren't as intense and obsessive about their paganism as rebuilders are. It was just the overhead religion of a culture in much the same way Christianity is for the western world. No doubt some questioned the truth of Thor, or took their folklore for granted, or just identified as part of the tribal identity without pondering the philosophies and traditions behind it (like lapsed Christians or non-denominations). It was just an acceptance of the way the world worked and how you behaved within that world because that's what people did.

Yeah I think I'm just beginning to get over my Wiccish phase in which the entire thing was an escape and/or an acquisition of personal power. That's not who I am anymore and it no longer enriches my life. I still do the Mystery stuff and trance and things, but it compliments the rest. But just doing that as a means of connection and realignment? That's so not sustainable for me anymore.

And sure my learning to see my mundane business as a Good Thing from a religious perspective is, let's face it, a glorified interpretation of me becoming OK with being a cog in a wheel, LOL. But hey, the machine needs cogs. (Though I will not hesitate to mouth off when it comes to my student loan debt and banks. This cog still has her rebellious and revolutionary streak. ;P)

This is the state I'd like to be in.

Oh, man, do I ever hear that!  I often need to try and connect back in.

I'm lucky in that my everyday life contains a lot of the things that I need to do to feel connected - lots of writing and lots of studying.  The gaining and distribution of knowledge is very important to me, after all.

Also, listening to traditional Irish songs (plus some others I really connect to), learning Irish (as best I can...I'm not very good yet) and playing my harp all make me feel just a bit more connected.  Plus the slightly crazier ones, like standing outside in the pouring rain, grinning like a fool, and finding places where I can't hear any roads or see any buildings (more difficult than it sounds living in Canberra on a uni student's schedule and lack of car... ;) )
The human brain is an amazing thing: it works twenty-four hours a day, every day from before we are born - except when we take exams.

Hi all, I thought of this question in the shower, the place where many great questions arise.

What makes you feel connected to: deities, nature, spirits, lwa, fae, your Higher Self, the Universe, Ancestors, etc? I'm trying not to leave anyone out, but alas there's a lot that could be in that list lol

Daily practice, journalling and objects dotted around my room or on my person, like statuettes, crystals and such. I also make sure that I'm always reading one book that has a spiritual theme. I tend to find that driving myself forward in my areas of study keeps me in touch with my Higher Self. Meditation and visualisation are really important to me for this too.

This may sound sort of strange, but what makes me feel connected a lot of the time is through reading something out loud. Two of the deities that I am connected to is Morrigan and Odin. I found a fiction book called Age of Odin, and it feels like that I am actively being listened to as I read out loud. I have a book dedicated to The Morrigan and I feel she listens as I read this book to her.

Just recently though, I've been having personal problems concerning strange things at night that don't feel right. And I had this strong ambition to pour some of my cranberry raspberry juice into the goblets on my altar and ask the gods to help keep me safe at night. I would draw a pentacle, I think a banishing pentacle, over the goblets and ask the gods to protect me. I feel like it's right thing to do. I feel more connected to my deities now that I have been doing this nightly basis.

Since I'm mostly an armchair pagan, one of the things that makes me feel more connected to the path I chose is being here in this forum daily and reading other people's experiences. I also read daily about different deities, myths and/or religious systems and that helps some.

On the other hand, just walking home to the train every morning, seeing the morning dew and hearing the birds chirping in the still (for the most part) silent town, gets me there everytime.

I want to throw something out that I haven't seen touched upon--

I have to feel safe in order to feel connected to my deities in most cases.

And I didn't realize this was what was interfering with my feeling of connection until reading through this thread just now. I was trying to understand why I felt more connected to more gods here in my parents home then when I'm away at university. It's certainly not that the place itself is more sacred or that I feel better able to be myself here (not by a long shot). Then it struck me--all of my basic needs are being met here.

My situation at university right now is one of homelessness. I quit a job that was robbing me of my health and self esteem--but with that meant I lost my housing and my meal plan. I don't regret it for one minute. The crappy nights of sleeping in my car, going more days than I'd like to admit without a shower, and getting very used to feeling hungry are all better than dealing with that job. But those are very basic needs that are very in your face and when you have to meet them on a day by day basis I think there's a stress involved that clouds out things like connection to the Divine.

I know there are people who get more spiritual in time of duress but I just don't think that's how my relationship with my gods works. I get a vibe more along the lines of "You've got things to work out, we'll still be here when you get back." I mean, yes I do ask them for help with things, but it's not a request that I feel or experience, it's much more habit, without the offering of reciprocation which I think it kind of natural considering the state my life is in.

The other thing is that the past week or so I've been in a particularly complicated and unpleasant living arrangement at my friend's apartment (out of necessity as it was getting below freezing most nights) and I've felt particularly disconnected there despite having more of my needs met. So I think the other requirement for me to feel connection is to have a fairly clean space, one that's not clouded by resentment or past heartbreaks or depression.

And along with that, I think there's a certain sense of self that's required. I've noticed when I feel low and anxious it's much much harder to feel them than when I'm at peace.

What makes you feel connected

I feel most connected when in nature or while doing a nature inspired meditation.

Same - I get something very different out of a text/article/poem if I read it aloud to if I just read it silently.  Similarly I feel prayers etc are more powerful if they're said aloud instead of just internally.  There's something about the act of speaking that adds a lot of power to it.

Creating things makes me feel connected, whether that be art, craft, cooking, gardening, anything with a concrete, physical end result.  While satisfying, doing stuff online doesn't hit the spot the way interacting physically with the world does.

I have a daily meditation/ self affirmation that helps me stay connected in the day to day. Just smudging and sitting for five minutes does wonders, though if I can take longer I definately do.

But also, when I'm working in the garden, or walking through the woods, I feel extra connected.

I just sit and meditate for 10-15 minutes or more, if I have time. Also, I find sketching & drawing deities really helpful, especially if I dedicate the drawing to them.
I love reading myths about them, too. When I was younger, I had an awesome book with great illustrations about the 12 Olympians, but I lost it (probably threw it away :ange: ).
I think that if I'm still on this path the next two years, I'll feel even more connected to them because I'm thinking of studying Archeology.

I feel connected when I walk outside and get hit with whatever weather is going on. I also feel most connected when I get those divine nudges- either comical occurences when I'm by myself, or when I am thinking about something and I seemingly get a reply by seeing the answer to my thoughts. Most recently, I was worried about something and when I looked up (I was driving), I saw on a billboard "No Worries!". Then I looked down at my radio to see the next song come on- "No Worries"!. "Alright, Universe. Very funny", I said.
