What makes you feel Connected?
« on: August 12, 2012, 03:34:31 pm »
Hi all, I thought of this question in the shower, the place where many great questions arise.

What makes you feel connected to: deities, nature, spirits, lwa, fae, your Higher Self, the Universe, Ancestors, etc? I'm trying not to leave anyone out, but alas there's a lot that could be in that list lol

Daily practice helps; at least sacrificial moments a day. Finding Deity in the positive and negative throughout the day helps as well. Reading about the Theoi, wroting a daily blog post about my religion or way of life, etc, etc.
Where I ramble on: Baring the Aegis
Where I try to be coherent: Little Witch magazine

I'm still fairly new to actual practise and offerings and I haven't felt particularly 'connected' to the gods as of yet in that regard.

However, reading through their myths and stories seems to create stronger vibes for me as does playing their hymns sung in Greek. Youtube is great for these set to music and it does a great job of setting the mood.

I'm still pretty new too :) I like reading myths as well, though Anpu's are kinda intimidating. He's one of the oldest deities in Ancient Egypt so there's a lot lol

I don't know much about deities, but to me nature is all around, and I feel most connected to it when I'm out in it. Feeling the sun in my face, the rain on my skin, the snow in my hair, and so on. Not sure about the others you mentioned, perhaps they're all just part of nature. I certainly feel that everything, rock or tree, animate or supposedly inanimate, has its own life force.

All the other stuff I mentioned is a "take what applies" thing, so you don't have to be sure about the others for me to value your opinion on what you are sure about. I just didn't want to leave anyone out of the question :)

Just knowing the gods are living around me. Right now I'm out on the patio and the clouds are overhead (this is the desert, most days there aren't clouds :p) and I know Frigga is nearby weaving. There was one of the tallest and thickest dust storms on the eastside yesterday and that's our wildhunt. So, I just feel connected watching everyday life/nature play out.

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

Now, desert, I can't imagine a dust storm. I've seen em sure, on the Discovery channel XD but I live in mountain country lol here there be clouds and forests and SNOW :D

Ritual with offerings.  Being out in nature -- in their element. Looking at pictures of art representing my gods helps too.

And "bedtime prayers."  No candle, no incense, just a simple words of thanks for all that I have.  Sometimes just talking to them in prayer that way really connects me.

The only time I don't feel connected is when I feel disconnected from reality. Even going through my daily grind, checking emails or my schedule is at least a vaguely spiritual act for me.

This is the state I'd like to be in.

Realistically, I do several connection check-ins each day.  There's always something going on to remind me of my connection to Deity.

My daily devotions and (as has already been said) seeing the gods/goddesses in daily life, in nature. Also reading about them when I think I've lost the connection.

For some reason, my work connects me. The instant I slide my boot home in the stirrup, I leave the real world behind and enter one where its just me, my horse and the natural world around us. The same is in the morning when I get up to do chores like my ancestors did, I love watching the sun rise over the trees from the parlour. There is a powerful draw that early in the morning and even dead tired, I always feel better after morning chores.

Then prayer and mediation. And music, I love it when I can take 5 minutes to myself and get lost in a song.
Jinx or Jinxy :)
Add a dash of folklore, a few centuries of farmer\'s blood and mix well.

I think it's that I see me doing my duty as a member of a household and a family, supporting myself and being able to repay debts, as well as keep up my end of the bargain with my covenant with the gods (making sacrifices and offerings in repayment) puts me firmly in the realm of "doing what's right", and that's what feels good.

"But, Maps." They said. "That's so mundane." They said. ;)

I do think some people get the idea that being "connected" means feeling something spiritual that's removed from their everyday lives. Rather than the everyday life being the source of what's spiritual. What you said here is right on; you pay your bills out of obligation, an obligation to something bigger, something bigger being the fabric of it all. It is the reason behind everyday life and it informs your everyday life. You can't seperate things as "this is for god and this for myself, this for my spirit and this for my body" (to paraphrase Gibran).

Another thing, too, is that I still feel heathen and "connected" even when I'm blah or agnostic. Pre-Christian worshippers weren't as intense and obsessive about their paganism as rebuilders are. It was just the overhead religion of a culture in much the same way Christianity is for the western world. No doubt some questioned the truth of Thor, or took their folklore for granted, or just identified as part of the tribal identity without pondering the philosophies and traditions behind it (like lapsed Christians or non-denominations). It was just an acceptance of the way the world worked and how you behaved within that world because that's what people did.
