Travel Shrines / Travel Magic
« on: October 26, 2011, 09:49:56 pm »
I've done a little research but I wanted to hear some personal experiences if people wouldn't mind.

Backstory:
I'm a pretty bad dorm situation right now. I had a pretty bad roommate at the beginning of the semester and switched to a different room and dorm with an even worse roommate (though it's almost worth is considering the dorm is so much nicer). And as a result I've been bouncing between sleeping in study lounges and crashing at my friend's apartment.

Thing is I've been feeling very uprooted and I've been toying with using a shrine and magic as my anchor. I have a bag of odds and ends like my tarot cards, trinkets from my Beloved Dead, an electric candle, etc. But I would like to make an actual shrine I could set up and take down and put in my book bag.

Also, with magic, I'd like to find some method that helps make a crappy space (like a study lounge) more bearable without laying down wards. Though I suppose I could cleanse and ward but considering the space isn't mine I feel a bit odd about that. Spellcasting and ritual all kind of allude me at this point. I don't want to give it up entirely as I think it could really help keep my stress levels down.

Thoughts? Experiences?

You said you crashed in your friends apartment sometimes. What about using their bathroom? (for whatever reason I always find it the easiest to meditate in there). If he/she doesn't already know about your spirituality/religion you could explain that you like to meditate (or something along those lines depending on how comfortable you are) and ask to spend however long you would need in the bathroom. You could lock the door and do your thing.

Another thing that might help (not quite sure what your practice entails) is to cast/imagine ect... a circle around you and make that your space for the time being. It's a little more (for lack of a better word) cerebral than carrying around a portable shrine with physical objects. But on the other hand it's completely portable. And you could probably include small items to help make your space feel more comfortable and homish.

Hope this is clear and helps. :)
