PCP-UPG: Justice/Vengeance Goddess
« on: October 21, 2014, 08:34:15 pm »
So, lately I've expressed my admiration for the role of (supposed to be villainous I guess) Queen Myrtha from the ballet Giselle. I admire a lot of characters. Their stories help me figure stuff out on some subconscious level, but they usually remain stories, unless they're mythological and the timing is just right. (Like, I've loved the Aesir for years and especially Freya but never felt their presence until maybe two or three years ago and Freya has never been one of them.)

With Queen Myrtha, though, I feel that I've gotten both thwapped and anti-thwapped. I've caught wisps of epiphanies about what's worth considering when it comes to navigating emotional responsibility (among others with people), and thought, this would be great to write to Myrtha about (I do... writing, I guess sometimes it turns into automatic writing, but nothing to fill a whole book with channeled messages about or anything.)

Aaand then some no-name, no-mythology incorporeal/imaginary friend of mine barges in all, "You're not ready yet. Do not do that thing."

While I believe it, I wondered if I could just throw out some UPG for this character. Or catch other people's projections. Either is fine and, who knows, they might be the same thing.

Spoiler:
For some reason, my mind went to Renaissance slashed sleeves and some bird of prey. It could be that my mind was on fairy tales, this folklore bit came from Germany, led my mind to Grimms' Snow White, Disney's Snow White, and then Claire Hummel's slightly more historically accurate Disney Snow White.

Heine described the Wilis as Bacchantes but I considered them closer to Furies, so maybe that's where my bird of prey UPG comes from, but for some reason I'm getting owls in particular so maybe Athena's getting mixed in somewhere in my mind.

So, Giselle is actually on my list of things that I need to watch sooner rather than later for spiritual reasons because the Wilis in the ballet are pretty much related if not the same thing as Vila in Slavic folklore. And that's the area of interest for me at the moment. And I am getting some UPG about Vila myself though it's something I'm chewing on mostly.

Vila seem to be a spirits of wind and can be fierce as such, though this seems to be in folklore as well. They are also warriors in folklore as far as I can tell.

..I saw a thing about Giselle and the Wilis the other day, seemed important but I forgot to share it.

I'll accept UPG of Vila, too. :)

(And Valkyries. I mean, if Heine can see a parallel to Bacchantes and me to Furies, why not?)

That sort of reminds me of something I read but I forgot where, that was about fairy women who got conned into marriages with human men who stole their skin, and for some reason the writer/folklorist tried to logic it up by saying the women in question were probably sylphs and not undines because an undine wouldn't need to change her nature or shed any sort of skin before going into the water.

I'm also wondering if the Wilis might not be related to some pre-Ophelia scorned-woman-drowns-herself-haunts-river legend.

That'd be interesting too! I mean, only if it wouldn't be too much trouble.

Oh it wasn't anything new, just a tumblr post about the ballet and Wili, suggesting they are Vila. I found it interesting to come across the ballet again so soon :P

I can sorta see a parallel to Valkyries, but they don't really feel like they perform the same function as them? They aren't tied to Asgard as far as I can tell. So they're a similar, but different group unique to their own, I think.

I believe there are a number of stories like that. I know that Rusalki (once again Slavic folklore) have been said to be women who have committed suicide after being jilted by their lovers. It's not an uncommon theme to say the least.
