Dream Analysis - Calling Deities?
« on: July 22, 2017, 03:29:26 pm »
Hello all - I wasn't sure where this went, however, seeing as it's meditation and dream based, I put it here. Mods, if you need to, please move it to the appropriate place. That stated, I would love to have some input on this dream and the analysis of it.

Back in June 2017, I relaxed greatly with a meditation before going to bed - lit candles, focused on my breath, drank strong chamomile tea, and meditated on a sole thought: meeting my patron deities. Did this by the candle light for about 30 minutes, and then went to bed. Once asleep, I noticed that I was in a dimly-lit library's lobby/main entrance area. I looked forward and saw a window which showed that it was twilight outside (I'd say dusk more so than dawn, but I could be wrong). In addition, I believe it was summer time outside, and the entire dream was in color - which happens occasionally for me. The library itself appeared to be a mixture of having been kept tidy, however, other areas were not

The next sequence I remember is seeing a tall, dark figure - I think the caretaker - which was either holding a lantern or a candelabra or a torch - I just remember it was lit - and he walked by me without pausing. We did catch each other's sight, and gave respectful nods to one another. During this exchange, I somewhat got the feeling of "you're allowed here, but be careful." He went into another portion/wing of the library through an entryway, and turned out of sight. I, however, went the opposite direction and went to the portion of the library he came from.

Within this wing, I saw a great number of books: some with leather binding, others more modern; some with dust, others not so; a few showing much wear (and love, in my opinion), and others appearing to never have been opened. Amongst the different books, however, I also saw artifacts within glass cases - similar to what you might see at museums. These artifacts were clear in focus when I saw them in my dream, however, as this is now almost more than a month out, I can't remember them. Maybe a trophy for a science fair, boxes, and other tchotchkes. There was one, however, that caught my interest: a vinyl record player, which appeared to be within a suitcase that was predominately blue, with red lines along the vertices of the box, and running down the middle (think similar to the UK flag, but without the X portion).

There was a disk playing with the needle touching it, however, voices were coming from it. One voice in particular became dominant: it was deep (baritone to bass in the scale), and gave me a creepy feeling. I don't remember exactly what it said, but I'm getting the feeling it wanted to do harm to me. I wanted to remove the needle from the player, but I didn't because then I'd have to remove the glass case, which was a bad idea. The very thought of that, and moving away from the box, upset the voice, and I remember a dark wave coming from the box, through the case, and coming to attack me. According to my notes that I wrote in my journal, "...menacing aura - a red-orange aura with burnt sienna or umber tints in it..."

At the moment it was to attack me, I called out, "Artemis, Bacchus, and Lord Jupiter - help me!" while crouching down to avoid the attack. My memory is fuzzy here - I remember either 1 or 3 balls of white light coming from nowhere, and either protected me, and/or neutralized the threat. I stood, and... then I woke up because my alarm went off.

What are your thoughts on my dream? I have a few interpretations already, but for some reason, it still comes back to me that something is off with the interpretations.

The problem is, I can only tell you what that dream would mean for me. The images you conjure--a library, a tall dark figure who's its caretaker, etc.--have some very specific symbolism in my way of viewing things, but that way doesn't necessarily extend beyond my own head.

What interpretations do you already have?
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I was thinking a lot about the Metamythos pantheon while reading the OP's dream too!

Touché - here's my analysis of it (with a little bit of my co-worker's interpretations in it as well).

... The library itself appeared to be a mixture of having been kept tidy, however, other areas were not.

The library to me has always been a place of knowledge - a depository of humankind's knowledge across the eons, simply put (I could go into the knowledge lost during the power struggles - but that's a different thread). It is a place where one can learn and grow their knowledge and intellect (however, not wisdom). Delving deeper, the fact that portions of the library were kept and others untidy symbolizes that I've uncovered certain "sections" of knowledge (tidy areas), while I still need to discover new knowledge (unkempt areas). Looking towards the outside weather/season/time of day: twilight is usually heralded as a transition between the worlds day and night. However, it could also be the time when the boundary of the spirit realm meets ours. To use an example, think of the movie Spirited Away when Chihiro is running within the abandoned amusement park, trying desperately to get back to the real world.... but fails because twilight has ended and it is now night time. Dreams, however, serve as a connection between this world and the Spirit world, thus it would make sense that it's twilight outside in my dream. Lastly, it being summer time is sheer coincidence (in my opinion) - I had this dream in June after all.

Examining just the mysterious figure alone, his role is caretaker, it would seem, or as the librarian - making sure everything is in order. From my science background, I know that sleep is essential to the brain as the time when it rewires itself, pruning and shaping the neural pathways, allowing itself time to recuperate from the day's onslaught of information. From this POV, he's there as the guardian of my sanity - I think in Freudian psychological terms, he could be either my ego or super-ego since he is tending to the maintenance of the brain... This makes further sense, when you take into consideration of what I felt during our exchange.

Again, books represent knowledge to me - however, the glass cases are a new touch. Museums are also institutions of knowledge and storage centers of artifacts from the past, thus explaining the glass cases. The cases protect the artifacts from being broken, however, allow the viewer to see them. Some of the items, I feel they represent significant portions of my childhood - for example, even though I state it's a science fair trophy above (bold), I would be wrong because I never won a science fair (always got bronze medal). However, that hypothesis doesn't work with the last artifact - the vinyl record player within a blue and red box - the only thing I could think of that is being represented by it would be my love for certain British cultural items (such as the hit series, Doctor Who), however, it wasn't within a British flag emblazoned box...

One voice in particular became dominant: it was deep (baritone to bass in the scale), and gave me a creepy feeling. I don't remember exactly what it said, but I'm getting the feeling it wanted to do harm to me. The very thought of that, and moving away from the box, upset the voice, and I remember a dark wave coming from the box, through the case, and coming to attack me. According to my notes that I wrote in my journal, "...menacing aura - a red-orange aura with burnt sienna or umber tints in it..."

...which leads to this interesting part. My mother and I have had interesting experiences with spirits before. In forests, I can usually tell when there is something off in a bad way - like a bad spirit or energy is nearby. Early in my path, I was foolish enough to not cast a circle properly at Samhain and pissed off two spirits... who then played the game of "Let's try to snipe Chris in his sleep" - learned to remember to do it properly from now on.

Back to the dream: I think the sticky point for me is what the hell the menacing aura part was. I can't figure out what it was other than it felt threatening to me. It could represent the vast unknown - however, if that is the case, then -- And now I just remembered something! This particular glass case was located under a large wooden table originally, and then I moved it to the table top. I was curious about it because I noticed it was on the floor and dusty. I think I had dusted it, and then - due to the voice, the dark aura, etc - I backed away from it, which angered it... This might be either a warning that I shouldn't be too curious (something I often do - go down rabbit holes like no other) or that I need to see things through more often (which I don't do enough of?).

Going with the previous part of this analysis, as well as Freudian psychology, one could say that me calling out to these three deities is a method of my super-ego protecting both the ego and the id. Since the super-ego is a reflection of my parents' super-egos, then that means it wants me to stay where I'm at: a lapsed Catholic (like my parents), thus preventing me from becoming a practicing Pagan/witch. However, given that I called out Artemis, Bacchus, and Lord Jupiter, it means that I want to do this, and thus I'm having an internal conflict: do I want to truly become a Pagan/witch and put myself at odds with my family (and possibly be rejected by them), or do I play to their tune, and live up to my parents' and family's expectations? (Aside: I'm a first born son, and to quote my dead grandmother - too many expectations were put on me by family too soon.)

That stated, why Artemis, Bacchus, and Lord Jupiter? The first two are easy: my co-worker stated that she sees them around me all the time. I've yet to try and do a guided meditation to either of them, but I think it'll be in the cards shortly. Looking back, I did the meditation (and dream) on June 10th - a full moon. So possibly, I did get Artemis to come? Lord Jupiter, however, is tricky to unravel. I'm not one who really believes in astrology, but if we consult different interpretations and consolidate them into one reading: apparently the Full Moon was in Sagittarius, which is ruled by Jupiter - which also happened to be stationed there - and thus, is a "call-to-arms" to have good faith, despite disillusionment, and my fears within my moral compass... Again, which makes sense given what I stated with the above analysis...

Overall Message
Definitely think that I need to have an internal monologue with myself as a person: do I do what makes me happy, or do I play captive to my fears that I'll be dismissed by my family members because I'm not what they wanted me to be? I have a good feeling that I've answered the question already internally, however, now I must execute it in the real world - which will be the hard part. Patron deity wise, I don't know if Artemis, Bacchus, and Lord Jupiter are truly my patrons; yes, they did answer my call/plea for protection, however, I need to do more meditations to see if they were only helping me because I'm still a student on this path, or if they truly want me to be their disciple...

PS: I'm sorry for the long post. I usually do things surface deep, but I had time to really dig deep and think of what this dream was really about. Thank you for reading through it all!

If I may, what is the Metamythos pantheon? Since I haven't heard of it, I googled it, and came across the Songs of the Metamythos by CF Cooper. Is that what you are referring to?

That's it. (CF Cooper is me.) One of its more prominent deities is Night, the Lord of Things Unseen--a mysterious, black-robed figure whose face is forever shrouded in shadow. He rules an underworld of thought and dreams from his palace, the inner sanctum of which is an unimaginably vast library of all knowledge:

"A heartbeat later, she stood where no mortal had set foot before. Every other room she’d seen, she sensed now, was just bricks and mortar; this place was the foundation, upon which the other rooms were built and all of them depended. Or more like an atrium; she stepped onto one of its many balconies and looked out from a dizzying height. The sum of human knowledge swept around her, plunged beneath her, and soared up until its utmost reaches spilled into a blazing point of light: the waking world, far above. A pair of stairways that mirrored each other wound around the open center and through its bordering galleries and alcoves, except that the two stairways were somehow linked into a single whole, so that in going far enough down one she ended up walking up the other. As if that weren’t disorienting enough, her feet soon met with gravity lapsed into a cockeyed drunk; stair steps that started off horizontal somehow staggered sideways until they were vertical, walls became floors, and spaces tumbled into each other at curious angles to finish right-side up, so that in the end the library made its own convoluted sense. But what set the library apart, of course, were the books. It was alive with them: tomes as big as grown men and pamphlets small enough to fit in the palm of a child; books covering every inch of wall space, and books flying in flocks on pages flapping like wings. And not just books; ribbons of disembodied numbers and symbols, entire alphabets she didn’t recognize, fell like confetti, while diagrams, charts, and catalogs of images flickered on thin air. Now and then, shafts of light filtered through the upper reaches of the library from the waking world, fingering first one volume, then another, touching on hundreds of works. This represented an infinitesimal fraction of one collection in a library that housed billions of divisions each housing billions of such collections, spread before Peregrine in stack after stack after stack. "

So yeah, your dream definitely mapped closely to archetypes that are very meaningful for me. But what's important is what it means to you, and from your other post above it's clear you've given that a lot of thought.

Very interesting mythos there - you are correct that a lot of the archetypes I had in my dream line up with the Songs of the Metamythos, especially after I read the excerpt on your website. They are interesting to me, but at the same time, seem very foreign to my understanding of the world. Which is why I love this religion/spiritual path: each person is unique and picks up on different things according to the sum of their life's experiences. I do believe that tomorrow I'll do a meditation out in the park. Hopefully I don't get eaten up by mosquitoes! ;-)

So a bit of an update: Decided to say hi to the three deities mentioned above the other day - didn't help that a storm was brewing (or did it help?) - but last night's dream was peculiar. I was shifting between scenes when suddenly a clear verbal message came out stating "Go to Egypt." And just now, for whatever reason, Thoth popped in my head.

I know I should first do some meditating on that message, but also wondering if someone could recommend where to do research on the Egyptian pantheon?

I know I should first do some meditating on that message, but also wondering if someone could recommend where to do research on the Egyptian pantheon?

The usual recommendation is The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt, by Richard Wilkinson; I'd suggest seeing if a library near you has it, since it's kind of pricey.

I'm not familiar with specific resources about Thoth, as he's not one of the gods I honor, but I am sure there are many; he's associated with writing and hidden knowledge, so that ties back to your vision of the library. I know that Thoth is prominent in Hermetic/alchemy traditions, and also in Egypt-flavored New Age practices, so you'll turn up those kinds of resources as well as scholarly/recon-type ones.

Reading back over your description of your dream, the combination of Artemis, Bacchus and Jupiter made me think of Sekhmet. That might be a bit tenuous, but she's a goddess of power, has associations with drunkenness, and is the Eye of Ra (who, being Top God, kind of matches up with Jupiter.)

Also, you might want to look up Set, and I'm not just saying that because I'm his follower  :) Some of Set's major associations are storms, the color red, and ordeals; I think he might be the one behind the voice in the victrola which you described.

why Artemis, Bacchus, and Lord Jupiter?
Maybe you have already thought of that, but it strikes me that those three all deal with wild forces of nature.

I also see some parallel between Artemis' arrows and Jupiter's bolts of lightening - since light is often a metaphor for knowledge this connects well with the library

(Bacchus having his own kind of knowledge, though the image of him in the library like some drunken student just popped into my head  :P )
