.. However, just because it was illegal doesn't mean it wasn't being practices, just that chances are that non-Native peoples didn't hear about it. When it became legal, of course there is going to be more press and information on it, because the people who are doing it can talk about it with being prosecuted for it. ..

Oh I admit that just because it was illegal doesn't mean it wasn't being practiced.  I was just pointing out that to many non-native's, thier first encounter with it (sundance) was from that movie.  I suppose in many ways its falls into the same sense of Native Practice's that suddenly became the norm or known (assumed any way) after the movies JEREMIAH JOHNSON and the THE MOUNTAIN MEN.  If I recall correctly it was the same movie (A Man Called Horse) that introduced the notion of the "Contrary" to the non-native community.

The mid to late 70's had a lot of Native American influences that became known to the non-native population.  A lot of influence that were taken or modified as they suddenly became the in thing and carried into the 80's before fading away from the public eye.  Though many were incorporated into the ecclectic practicing that were starting to appear as the trads and Wicca specifically became profitable in books.

Ah okay. I understand now. :)
