I'm in a nostalgic mood today and I got to thinking, whatever happened to knee-bend guy?

Some of you probably remember him: he ran a "group" (whose actual existence is questionable) called the Daughters of Freya, whose followers supposedly did 1000 knee-bends a day, and tried to pass of photos of a women's tennis team as his priestesses. The sheer absurdity is memorable.

Does anyone else have any favorite hoax and/or fringe groups you feel nostalgic about? And are there any interesting ones around today?

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

I know, right? I couldn't even remember the name of the group, I had to search the archive board to find it.

No sign of them in many years -- and I have no idea what happened to the "knee-bend guy" (I think his name was Tony). I still google for "Daughters of Freya" every once in a while. However, a version of the "Daughters of Freya" did find a home in the (fictional) history of the Imperial Republic of Shireroth (a micronation): http://shireroth.org/shirewiki/Daughters_of_Freyja

Wow, that's a lot more badass than a tennis team!

I remember a few really strange ones from TC: a member who claimed to be the reincarnation of a (not dead) goddess (Isis, if I remember correctly) and the guy who wanted all women (but not men) to be naked -- for religious reasons, of course.  Then there is my favorite: the person who wanted ALL former Pagan sites controlled by the Christian church to be returned to "Pagans" -- and to their former natural state (tear down all those centuries old cathedrals, etc.)

Of course there was the whole PUC thing, but I don't even want to think about that.

The Posadists.  A 70's fusion of Trotskyism and UFOlogy.  Their argument was that aliens would be the liberators of the working class. Because only a socialist society would be advanced enough to create flying saucers.

Their other main thing was their belief that nuclear war would be a good thing.

Wow, that's kind of  ???

Sort of reminds me of the pamphlet that got sent to my workplace (along with someone's bill payment or something) that was a weird mix of Sovereign Citizen and Satanic Panic conspiracy. Apparently, the government generates money by selling citizens' souls to Satan, and if you free yourself from you legal identity you will gain psychic powers.
