Yup, and it smells bad, too.

Use of a red pen is probably a reasonable "replacement" for blood. Ritually declare the ink to be your blood (or for whatever purpose) and go to town. Don't know why somebody would do that, but hey.

A "named" substitute might be some Dragons Blood (it's a powdered herb) mixed in iso-propyl alcohol - use a quill or glass pen with that - it'll clog a standard fountain pen

Would it be acceptable to use ones own blood as ink when writing within his/her Book of Shadows?

I don't know of any particular authority that governs such things.  It is not like personal journals come with a licensing board.  Certainly, if appearing to be especially brimful of melodramatic nonsense is the goal, that would be an appropriate endeavour to demonstrate the breadth of one's foolishness.

If you use a fountain pen there are scores of amazing red shades available.  Much better than the "red" found in common pens.  Goulet pens has a page of color swabs for red ink at http://www.gouletpens.com/Swab_Shop_Red_s/823.htm

I think the energy put into learning to use a fountain pen, how to load it with ink and how to care for it adds special energy to your book.  Using it feels more magical than a supermarket pen.
