The sons of Heracles Brotherhood
« on: February 05, 2018, 11:45:50 am »
Hello Everyone,
I'm New to this forum so I hope I'm not breaking any rules with this post.
I was recently exposed to a Brotherhood called the sons of Heracles While visiting my family in Greece (I'm Greek, living in the US)
I have been practicing Hellenism for 6 years now and recently discovered this brotherhood that apparently existed for many years now.
I was wandering if anyone here has ever heard of this brotherhood? And would you be interested in hearing about it?
I am asking because I am working on translating the only book about the subject from Greek to English, Hopefully as fast as I could considering I have a regular life that Include work.
Also would like to see if there are many Hellenism practitioners in this forum.

Thank you and may the gods bless you all.

I'd be interested in hearing more. Is it a men-only cult?
Remember how long you’ve been putting this off, how many extensions the gods gave you, and you didn’t use them. At some point you have to recognize what world it is that you belong to; what power rules it and from what source you spring; that there is a limit to the time assigned to you, and if you don’t use it to free yourself it will be gone and will never return. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book II

To be honest altough It is called a brotherhood I did not see anything in the book saying that women can not be a part.
When I'm done translating I will gladley publish it for free here.
If you want to hear more detailes about it feel free to send me a private message I read the book multiple times already and will gladley talk about it

Just want to add that I think that Cult is the wrong word to describe the sons of Heracles for many reasons but especially for the bad connotation it has in our times.

I feel she meant in the sense of Classical religion; e.g. the cult of Dionysos, etc

Hello -

Before you offer to publish the book anywhere, you should be aware that this raises a number of issues with copyright. Copyright law limits who can make copies of materials, or distribute them - and that includes translation.

Posting copies of copyrighted work is also against the rules here. Short excerpts can be shared (such as are part of a review, or a specific answer to a particular question) but as our rules say:

Quote
DO NOT post more than a sentence or two of copyrighted material without obtaining specific permission from the current copyright owner to post the material on The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum and posting that permission with the copyrighted material. Link to the material instead. (See our Copyright Guidelines for more information).

We're also just not set up as a forum for extremely long book-length works, even if the copyright issues were not a concern.

You mentioned in your first post that you weren't sure if you were doing something against the rules. We expect everyone to read the rules of the forum before posting, and they're available if you have questions. If something doesn't make sense to you, we would much prefer you ask questions about it int the appropriate folder (that's the Board Questions one). You may also find this post in that folder helpful.

Hello Jennett,

The book I am speaking about is a book that has been in existence in Greece for many years.. The publication company that printed this book has been closed for many years and the author is unknown. I managed to put my hands on this book from a local collector for a big amount of money. The book is not being printed or sold in any store or publisher in Greece (and believe me I checked). It is a rare book, I also checked every libaray in greece and could not find it. I did speak to a few book collectors that explained to me that there are only a few copys of this book around.

The reason I want to publish the translation here for everyone is because I believe in the freedom of information for subjects like this one, knowing I'm not hurting anyone. As a proud worshipper of the greek gods and a Greek with a heritage that goes far back I would like to share it with my fellow hellnismos and others who are interested in the subject.

The book is not very long and I was just intersted in posting a simple PDF file. When I joined this forum I did read the rules just like I do in any forum I join, And I did not think I'm breaking any rule. If I'm not allowed to publish it here I will not.
My english is not perfect sorry for any mistakes.

Hail the gods and have a good day

Unfortunately, just because it is out of print or there are few copies around does not mean it is out of copyright - the details are a lot more complicated than that!

(I'm most familiar with US copyright law, because I'm a librarian who's done additional significant education in copyright, but Greece is signatory to many of the same international treaties that affect copyright and other intellectual property that the US is.)

What you do on your own site or hosting space is up to you.

We here are not copyright or intellectual property lawyers, so we have policies here both to protect the site, and to not confuse other people that may not be aware of the issues. (Since if people see copyrighted works posted here, they may think posting others is okay. That's the kind of thing that can get a site in serious legal trouble.)

I'm not here to argue about the laws of copyright altough I did check carefully before offering the book.
I will not post it here.
I will say however that whoever is interested in the subject I brought up is more then welcome to as me any questions, Here or feel free to PM me

I may be very interested in this! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

To answer your questions: No, I have not heard of it. Yes, I would be interested in learning more.

I'm all for learning more about the Gods of Olympos both as a Hellenic Polytheist and as a history buff.

Thanks again!
