...Are there actually dealers who sell djinns? Cause, slavery in England was abolished when this guy went there from Haiti and it was decided that he wasn't considered a slave in England (or at least I think that's what was said in my Haitian rev course last week...I'll check it out later.)

Get a strong enough unicorn and s/he can drag the rock at a good clip. T'would make coming to a screeching halt a potentially dangerous matter, though. It'd have to be a Clydesdale Unicorn. Mine's a Rainbow Dash Unicorn.

Dizzy unicorns puke up twice their weight. Ever tried mucking out a magical stable of woo when it's filled with puke and pissed off unicorn? That horn is sharp. It's like, "woah! Invocation of the Magical Swiss Cheese up in here!"

Well what I'm trying to establish is whether or not practitioners branch out to "trial and error" or continue with the same recipes for salves and potions that have been passed down from Grimoires?

 
I once came across a treatise (a copy of something several hundred years old) in which the author is trying to understand the workings of lodestones (natural magnets). He performs several dozen experiments which include breaking the lodestones, testing it with various materials, discovering that they have poles, etc.

Today this is simple science which "every child knows" but it is obvious from the work that he had no clue at first how these wondrous objects work and exhaustively seeks to understand them.

So yes, trial and error is a HUGE part of what allows both science and craft of any sort to grow.

In my path, in studying the 20 arts/sciences we are often given (or set ourselves) various tasks that sometimes stretch the boundaries of magick as we understand it, whether personally or as a collective.

Ex: For my wysardry test I was asked to write a ritual using the 16 tools of our path "in the correct order." (This btw without having some of the tools ever explained to me by my teacher, and at the time, far less available info on how they might be used.)

According to my teacher I ended up designing something (I'm not able to go into details) that was a new direction on what our path had usually done in a certain circumstance.

Later, when I asked my teacher what he'd expected, he told me, "I had no idea what you'd come up with."

On another occasion, for my test in talismancraft, my teacher asked me to make 1) a bag charm 2) a sigil charm 3) a house ward project designed for a specific purpose (which he made me choose immediately on accepting the assignment). Foolish overachiever that I am, I ended up creating an object that was all 3 in one. The house ward was to help my (now) ex deal with his anger issues. I made a fountain with a miniature deer scare. The bamboo tube of the deer scare was the bag charm. The rock the tube slammed down on held the sigil, which was activated every time it was struck by the tube. The entire fountain (also containing other runes, sigils and configurations) spread peace through the house.

So while we certainly CAN use old spells or recipes, innovation is (should be) always occurring or else we limit our possibilities.
