Steven Universe fangems
« on: December 17, 2016, 08:21:09 am »
A friend of mine got me into watching Steven Universe. These are the adventures (and complex personal histories) of extraterrestrial aliens who reside in a small, cozy, coastal town among humans. These aliens are conscious manifestations of light energy, and usually named after gemstones. I say "named" but from what I'd watched so far, they're more like castes. Quartzes (Rose Quartz, Amethyst) are soldiers, Pearls (...Pearl...and, uh, the other Pearl...) are servants, Sapphires are "rare and aristocratic", Diamonds are rulers—but those Diamonds don't live with humans, they live in the sky and occasionally plot the devastation and destruction of planet earth.

The light energy forms around a gemstone-like structure for which these beings are named. If that solid gem part gets damaged, then the person can't really form the conscious manifestation of light energy part (very unfortunately, they might not exactly die.)

Another neat thing they can do is fusions or syncretisms. Under the reign of the Diamonds, this was only acceptable between gems of the same type: Ruby fusing with Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, and another Ruby to make one big RUBY for example. In the beach town, these fusions get more creative, resulting in a giant with several eyes and arms, more powerful skills, and a distinct personality from the gem-people who bonded to form them. When there's disharmony between the originators of the fusion, or they just want to unfuse and they can, the bonding process ends (and can be repeated another time, to make the same being.)

And lapidary nerds are drawing and writing characters inspired by (but not yet found on) this show.

UPG Alert: A pop culture character that I guess I could say has been thwapping me...crossed over from one source material (fictionalized history/legend) over to this one (Steven Universe.) I can only guess that's due to...something in the show that better conveys a concept that more comfortable for this being or that she wants me to know?

Anyway, I'm glad for the fandom to have set some basis for something sort-of-maybe-kind-of like that, and made vocabulary for it. Because I'd consider the one in my UPG paragraph a fangem, originally Cordelia (from Spenser's Faerie Queene) and now Carnelian.

So, anyone else out there work with fangems, fusions, gemsonas (when someone draws a corporeal human as a Steven Universe type gem-alien), or even characters and concepts from the canon source material? I do invite you to share! :)

So I do have a gemsona, a reworked version of a Sailor Moon villain self-insert from the 90s because, hey, she's already named after a gem, why not.

But I get the most out of mining SU for tools - it's a great lesson in song-based magic, for one thing, but I've been doing a lot with the idea of fusion and identity creation, especially in light of The Answer putting forward the idea that fusion can change destiny.

Interest without meaning! Solutions without problems! By using mi fa mi mi fa mi ti la! (I really like the music. Even the twee-est tunes hide something sad or eerie in context.)

Yay, more crossovers! I used to keep saying that my gemsona would be Tiger's Eye Chalcedony but now I think I'm more of a Goethite.

I'd love to hear more about what you'd figured out so far with fusions, unless the concepts are still in the don't-eat-raw-cookie-dough stage. (Or they're not my cookies, which is fair enough and fine too of course. ;) )
