Just because some people go about eclecticism in an incoherent way does not mean eclecticism inherently lacks cohesion.

You might take a look at the definitions of eclecticism and syncretism (links are to OneLook, so you can consult and compare a wide range of definitions) to see how the sense in which many pagans often use these words is a sense that's slanted for the purpose of disparaging eclecticism in general.Sunflower

 
I am so sorry if I have offended, Sunflower.  This is of course my opinion, but based on the definitions in those links, an eccelctic with a overall sense of cohesion would also fit the definition of a syncretic, and thus syncretic would be more appropriate, but I have not read any of the articles you stated nor am I as familiar with the history of term as I would like, so please forgive my ignorance for now.  As with any circumstance of my own ignorance, I do intend to rectify it.
