What is the truth about herbs within the nightshade family? I know that sweet/hot peppers are within the nightshade family and tomatoes and potatoes, but they aren't deadly unless im misinformed....

Thoughts?

Just because one plant in a family is safe, it doesn't mean they all are.  The Solanacea (nightshade) family has a wide variety of plants ranging from the safe and yummy (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) to the incredibly toxic (the ones you're asking about.)

I completely agree with what everyone else has said about experimenting with these plants - DON'T. They can kill you quickly or, in some cases, cause permanent brain damage.

That said - Belladonna is widely used as a homeopathic treatment for stress, among other things, if you're interested.  These contain very little of the actually plant and are pretty safe.  (That does not mean go try to make it yourself!) You should be able to find an over the counter version anywhere that sells homeopathic remedies.

What everyone else said, plus this: potatoes, once they oxidize (turn green) are actually toxic.

A few things about eating green potatoes:

  • The process that causes greening is the same as what causes greening in other parts of the plant--chlorophyll production via photosynthesis.
  • Green potato bits aren't terribly toxic, but because solanine (a toxin found in all potatoes, by the way, not just green ones, though at much lower levels) is cumulative.  It doesn't clear out of our systems quickly, so the more green potato you eat in a short period of time, the more likely you are experience symptoms of poisoning.  Theoretically.

Of course, if people were regularly being poisoned by green potatoes, there would be stories.  It would be news.  I think the threat is overblown, but that doesn't mean regular consumption is a good idea.

Per lab analysis, homeopathic remedies contain virtually none of the original plant material and are, basically, water.

I seem to recall that for a long time tomatoes were believed to be toxic, by the way.  Because the fruit is the only part of the plant that isn't.
