Hungarian Witchcraft?
« on: October 13, 2020, 12:51:18 pm »
Hi everyone,

I hope I have posted in the right forum. I am 1/4 Hungarian and feel a strong pull to the Hungarian side of my family. My grandmother was full Hungarian and my great-grandmother came over from Hungary with her. I was wondering if any knew anything about Hungarian Witchcraft. I did come upon one or two resources on the subject, but is there any resources that you may have? Are there any books that you may know about? Any information would be appreciated. I'm just wanting to do some research into the Hungarian side of witchcraft. Thanks everyone.

I don't know much but Hungarian religion is shamanistic and bears similarities to Finno-Ugric traditions elsewhere (or Turanic if one subscribes to Turanist theories). I suspect wicca would be fairly alien to any of these traditions.

I've poked at this a bit, due to family history (my mother's side of the family) and my impression has been that a) it depends a lot on how you're defining terms like 'witchcraft', and b) there's not a lot available in English in the first place. (And possibly just not a lot written down, but that's harder for me to figure out given my language skills)

Mom's told me a few family stories about my great-grandmother, who was very clearly doing witchcraft things (charms, blessings, making various physical items, both salves/teas/etc. and things like protective charms) but where the connected religious practice was Catholic, including regular small pilgrimages to a local saint's shrine a moderate distance away as part of the magical work (i.e. the kind of thing you could do once or twice a year, but not every week pre-automobile.)

But details about what she was actually doing? Those didn't get passed down. (This was Austro-Hungarian empire era, and I'm not sure which side of the modern border she was on, but at least regional. Tiny small mountain village, though.)

I did find out that Gypsy Witchcraft was prevalent in Hungary. So I am going to do some research in that as well.

Just as an FYI: treat any recent source that refers to "Gypsy Witchcraft" as kinda suspect. Historical sources, of course, are an exception because that's just how it was at the time.

Maybe try to avoid using the term yourself. The word gypsy is frequently considered a slur by the ethnic group of origin. It's like referring to Italian Witchcraft as wopcraft: outdated and rude.

Do you know whereabouts in Hungary your great-grandmother is from? I ask because Hungary then is not necessarily Hungary now. The borders in the greater Austro-Hungarian area changed more often than some folks change underwear. As a result, a lot of people who came to the United States got dumped under the heading "from Hungary" when the reality is a lot more complicated.

A good point. For instance, a lot of immigrants from that region were Rusyns, who never had their own state, so their descendants often identify as Hungarians, Ukrainians, Slovaks, etc. because a map will show their place of origin in one of those countries.

Sorry Allaya. I had no clue 'gypsy' was a slur word. I have no clue where my great-grandmother was from in Hungary. That I need to find out. Thanks for the help.

Lots of people don't!
