If people have no god to believe in, they are going to believe in something (or someone) else.

But is that belief considered religion? Hardcore fans have "shrines" to One Direction. Is that considered religious? There's a difference in believing something/someone who is divine/holy than in believing in someone who is famous.

However, I agree with you that the need of religion is deeply ingrained in the human psyche. It is actually my personal reason for turning pagan from atheism.

I disagree though in the preceding statement. I can see a future (however distant it is) where most of the populace is atheistic or, at least, non-theistic as a definite possibility. Especially since atheism is definitely on the rise globally.

What is the proper definition of religion then? (not a trivial question, I know).

The fans of pop bands will (hopefully) grow up and learn not to take their music tastes too seriously. But take a politician, for example. Assume that there are people that:

1) Believe that he is perfect in every way (=all-knowing and all-powerful; often awarded nicknames such as "Father of the nation").
2) Are ready to do everything he says
3) Are ready to physically destroy anyone who doubts p.1-2.
4) (bonus) Believe that this politician will lead the world to the perfect future.

This has happened before not once (and in some cases, this worldview actually replaced the former religion that became heavily persecuted), and I believe this may at some point happen again. Formally, some may not recognize this form of worship as religion, but to me the similarities are big enough, and may very well fulfill the same need of human psyche.

I agree with your points. It seems modern personality cults are comparable to religous worship.

Although I am part of that "some" you mention :)
