Mythcon 44
« on: May 21, 2013, 04:55:27 pm »
This isn't a pagan event, but I suspect many of us pagans will be interested. NOTE: Besides being a member of the Mythopoeic Society, I have no official connection to the event sponsors.

Mythcon 44
http://www.mythsoc.org/mythcon/mythcon-44/

This is the annual conference of the Mythopoeic Society. From their website:

Quote

The Mythopoeic Society is a national/international organization promoting the study, discussion, and enjoyment of fantastic and mythopoeic literature through books and periodicals, annual conferences, discussion groups, awards, and more. We are especially interested in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams, prominent members of the informal Oxford literary circle known as the “Inklings” (1930s-1950s).

In other words, it's about creating myths, with a special focus on Tolkein and his contemporaries. This year it's in East Lansing, Michigan, July 12-15...and I've bit the bullet. I'm finally going!

If anyone else is interested, chime in; I'd be curious to hear from other Cauldronites, if any have been in the past or are planning on going this year.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

It's something I have always wanted to attend, but when I had the money for something like that, I did not have the time -- and vice-versa.

I'm twisting my husband's arm to have my website up by then, in which case I plan to be blogging about it the whole time. In which case, maybe you can feel like you were there.

I'm off to Mythcon! I'm excited, but also a bit nervous, since it's a small group of attendees, many of whom I'm sure know each other from previous years, and I won't know a soul. We'll see how it all turns out...

I'm esp. curious about their Bardic Circle, an informal social gathering each evening, where folks take turns telling tales around the conceptual campfire. To be face to face with other folks sharing their myths?? We mythopoets are so few and far between, I never thought I'd live to see that happen!

And I will indeed by blogging from Mythcon, so tune in (link in my signature) if you're so inclined.

Gotta say, it's only been half a day so far, but I'm enjoying this very much. If you can swing it cash- and time-wise one of these years, I recommend it.

I've wanted to attend a Mythcon for years, but have never had the cash and the vacation time at the same point in time.
