* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

I...don't see how I'm implying this at all, but maybe I'm misunderstanding. I want the government to get out of the definition of marriage

Being neither married nor considering marriage, I have not looked into this too closely. However, my understanding is that there are a number of tax breaks built into the system for married couples filing jointly which do not apply to other categories of filer. A quick google search also shows a few tax penalties which are relevant to married couples. However, the almost uniform consensus appears to be that, on average, a married couple will pay noticeably less in taxes than a comparable (living together, same income, etc.) non-married couple. This sort of thing, I believe, is what wadjet was referring to.

Not so much on the tax breaks as there used to be.  It's more a case of a married couple gets double the standard deduction of a single person, but the same as 2 single persons.  Double the deduction on several things (untaxed portion of the sale of a house for example), but 2 single people together would get the same amount.  You get the idea....
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

For perspective, in the UK the key person in a marriage ceremony is the registrar. CoE vicars are registrars by default; any other kind of ceremony must be attended by a civil registrar who will prepare the certificate at the end. The signing of the certificate is the moment the marriage becomes valid.

Civil registrars, naturally, officiate at civil unions as well. But nobody can, or should, try to force vicars to do the same.

In the Soviet Union, marriage was civil-only. Still, about 70 years of that were not enough to make people want to call it anything else.

In the stae of Washington in the US - you get a license and the person performing the ceremony (minister, jusdge, any one legal to) signs the form and files it with the courthouse - and you are married.  Not much different than the UK.
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

This whole thread makes me chuckle, by the way, because it is now about my "no marriage" hypothesis instead of the topic.

Honestly, it reads to me like "I want government to get out of the business of defining marriage so they can have another office where people get married".  And ... what's the point again?

The original point was something entirely different, ha, involving changing societal views and the way that government and other institutions function....but it's pretty very clear that there are a great number of steps in between what we have now and "no marriage", haha. (The point was that eventually there wouldn't be a substitute marriage thing, but that people would have learned better ways to deal with their lives. But the generally response to that has seemed to be "but that's too hard". Oh well. I knew it wasn't a popular opinion.)

Actually, it's been 'I disagree'.  Saying it's been 'but that's too hard' is a way of putting your opponents down and trivializing their quite valid objections to your notions.  (see what I did?  'notions' is also a trivializer - I should have put 'ideas'.)

As for the rest, thread drift isn't a big problem here.  We go where the conversation takes us.

Laughing. I was actually semi-aware of that choice of words; it was meant as a light-hearted jab, but maybe I didn't come across the right way. But by "hard" I meant more "complicated". Which is, of course, a valid objection.
