University of Montana Now Requires All Students to Pass a Rape and Sexual Assault Quiz

The University of Montana is gearing up for the new school year — and trying to figure out a way to respond to the multiple allegations of sexual assault on campus that prompted a Federal Department of Justice investigation last spring. Here's a start: the university is requiring all students to complete an online video tutorial on sexual violence and score 100 percent on the accompanying quiz before they can register for spring semester courses. According to Danielle F. Wozniak, an associate professor and co-chair of Montana's University Council on Student Assault who helped launch the tutorial, the University of Montana is the first university to require this type of education.

You need a UM email address to view the tutorial, but according to the PETSA (Personal Empowerment Through Self Awareness) website, it's 20 minutes long and includes seven videos on topics like "myth and facts," "what you should know," "a rape prone culture," and "risk reduction for everyone." The intro is clear and to the point: "Sexual violence can happen on any campus, and it has happened at The University of Montana."

I hope this catches on. I would really like to see the actual video, too.

Depends on what the video/quiz is like.  If it's about dressing properly, etc...putting the blame for being raped on the woman, then it's not a good thing.

According to the Jezebel article, it's gotten some very positive feedback from women- I think if it were slut-shaming or victim-blaming, there would be some news about it. But yes, it's hard to say without actually having access to the video or quiz.

Depends on what the video/quiz is like.  If it's about dressing properly, etc...putting the blame for being raped on the woman, then it's not a good thing.

Thank you for posting this, Brina. I just watched them, and I have to say I think it's a fantastic start. I think I'm going to send them to my high-school aged cousin- even if they do mention resources available specifically at the university, and reference Montana law, the overall message is very positive and informative.

I watched the first three. And I REALLY like what they did. The "Law" video talks about the law and school rules, AND they define what does not count as consent - they include intoxication, coercion, and surprise. Best line: "Consent is about saying 'yes', much more than it is about saying 'no'." I'm really really happy with this. The "Myths & Fact" video is really good too. I love how blunt all of the videos I watched are.

It's wonderful that they have to get a 100%. My one complaint is they use "she" as most of the examples, but they do remind people that it's not just women.
