Contempt is solely the Judges choice, one side or the other asking for it, does not mean the judge will see the action as such.

Does anyone know what the usual penalty is for first time contempt of court given by the judge in this case, or statute if there is one?

That is up to the judge so long as it does not excede 1 year. Basically the person has to show they no longer hold the court in contempt. In this case, if she was jailed the judge would keep asking her every few days whether is sorry she did it, that she was wrong to have done it and that she will not do it again. Until she agreed, she stays in jail or until the judge thinks she will not change her mind.

The whole point of contempt of court is to enforce respect and maintain order in the court and it's rulings.
