Related to the argument on this thread, I want to share this article I read today:
http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2009/11/12/rapists-who-dont-think-theyre-rapists/ - Rapists Who Don't Think They're Rapists

Six percent of men surveyed admitted to either rape or attempted rape...as long as the word "rape" isn't used.

If a survey asks men, for example, if they ever “had sexual intercourse with someone, even though they did not want to, because they were too intoxicated (on alcohol or drugs) to resist your sexual advances,” some of them will say yes, as long as the questions don’t use the “R” word.

63% of the rapists committed a median average of 3 rapes or attempted rapes each. Just 4% of the men surveyed committed over 400 attempted or completed rapes. (That's 75 men. 400 abuses.)

This concept of victim-blaming is the biggest load of bullshit outside a cattle ranch. There is no "accidental" or "grey-area" rape. These men know perfectly well what they are doing, and are going to keep doing it.

When you delete a quotes content to just leave the linkback you have to put the opening and closing code on different lines.  Just hitting return between them will do it.

Staff can check this, and if we have time we will often fix it for you (as I did, above).  Even if we don't have time, we can still see that you tried to keep the rule and won't moderate you for what is basically a typo in the quote process.

I don't really think there's a difference and I do see.  It's hard to put why into words.  However, 'outing' the names of the boys is trying to enact punishment of them beyond what the law describes.  Especially since the laws perscribe that the identities be withheld.

It seems to me the boys "outed" themselves when they took pictures of their crime and distributed those pictures. Essentially, they bragged about what they'd done to her. They weren't concerned about keeping it a secret until she decided to stand up for herself, fight back and press charges against them.

Personally, I think she's very brave to stand up and refuse to be silenced by anyone. Including the judge. She knew what the potential consequences of her actions were. She decided to do what she thought was right anyway.

Very brave or very stupid.

Contempt of court is detention until a person sees the errors of their ways up to a max of 1 year.

Given some of the other issues, she really doesn't have much choice but to leave the country now either.

Simply following the law would have been a lot faster.

I don't get it. Why would she have to leave the United States? Never mind that the contempt charges were withdrawn, anyways.

Given that she's willing to be jailed, fleeing the country makes no sense.

LOL. Why on hearth she would leave the country? It's already been said but it bears repetition - she was ready to go in jail and accept the legal consequences. It was an informed choice. Where does the stupidity come in?

A lot faster and a lot more easy .

Hence her bravery in doing what she perceived to be the most ethical choice at her disposal.

There's probably more than one judge and the charges were dropped.  Moving still seems overkill.

1 - last I saw the request by the defendant's lawyers that she be charge have been dropped.  that still leaves the legal option for the judge to punish her for contempt. that is unlikely due to the publicity though.

2 - judges are elected in KY. this has been a major political hit against this woman, one she not likely to forget. It also embarrassed the local court system. so long as she is on the right side of the law she is ok, but she's now on the radar.  Underage drinking again? expect penalties rather than the benefit of the doubt.

I know several people who pissed off a judge or two in ways that hurt their re-election chances and never saw any need to move out of the county. Heck, by pissing off this judge and hurting said judge's chances for re-election, she's probably really pleased some of the judge's opponents so it is probably a wash.

I still don't get why she should have to move. I might be being dense (not exactly unusual) but I don't see what the issue is. I'm sure it's not the first time that a duly elected official has been upset by something and I'm damned sure it won't be the last.
