I just hope Russia follows through with what they say they are going to do. Then we won't have to get involved militarily.

The problem is you can't really protect them without getting involved in the war. Then you have to start picking sides and then you have Vietnam all over again. The UN should be the ones trying to broker peace and stability, not the US or another country.

 
The UN was so effective in what place? Rwanda?

Actually, you can protect them without picking 'sides' by listing behaviors that will result in punishment and tailoring the punishment that only hurt the people doing the behaviors.  Using chemical weapons should be on that list of behaviors.

If the UN is not willing to get involved, then the people that have the power to get involved should.  Granted, this doesn't mean just the US.  I see a lot of opposition to helping out innocents in Syria be couched in terms that roughly translate as 'They're dirty, sub-human Muslims that I don't know thus I don't care what happens to them'.  

Especially around this time of year, anti-Muslim sentiment goes up.

And that somehow invalidates what is the moral course of action?  Granted, I'm not sure we can effectively intervene where we 'should' as there is the issue of limited resources.  This sort of thing is going on all over the globe on a near continuous basis.

It doesn't invalidate the moral course. Of course if the US does get involved it shows American exceptionalism on the moral level.
