If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Syria accepts Russian proposal on weapons
« on: September 10, 2013, 01:40:29 pm »
Quote
An unexpected Russian proposal for Syria to avert a U.S. military strike  by transferring control of its chemical weapons appeared to be gaining  traction Tuesday, as Syria embraced it, France said it would draft a  U.N. Security Council resolution to put the plan into effect, and China  and Iran voiced support.

Obama is willing to consider it instead of military action (assuming Syria follows through). The only problem now appears to be Russia. Although they proposed the idea, they apparently have problems with it being a Security Council Resolution (which could be enforced) but wants it to be just an agreement.

And that's a big assumption.  Hard to believe that a man who would gas his own people would have a shred of integrity.

That's why I think having UN inspectors on the ground and the threat of force to back them up is a requirement for this to have any chance of success. Assuming Russia (and China) come around to this view, there's still the problem of protecting the UN people doing this from both sides in the civil war.

Yep.  Which means boots on the ground.  Peacekeeping detail.  Not exactly the unbelievably small response we've been hearing about.
Also, are we 100% sure it was the govt who used the gas.  Certainly the stuff needs to be removed from the country, but we'll be looked at as invaders, and whoever deployed the sarin could just as easily turn it on our troops.  And conventional warfare is just as much a risk.  We don't want to back Assad or the rebels, that's fine, but once somebody opens fire the whole region is going to erupt.

The problem with civil wars are all the innocents that are caught in the middle between the two sides.  Someone needs to protect them.

The problem is you can't really protect them without getting involved in the war. Then you have to start picking sides and then you have Vietnam all over again. The UN should be the ones trying to broker peace and stability, not the US or another country.

Actually, you can protect them without picking 'sides' by listing behaviors that will result in punishment and tailoring the punishment that only hurt the people doing the behaviors.  Using chemical weapons should be on that list of behaviors.

If the UN is not willing to get involved, then the people that have the power to get involved should.  Granted, this doesn't mean just the US.  I see a lot of opposition to helping out innocents in Syria be couched in terms that roughly translate as 'They're dirty, sub-human Muslims that I don't know thus I don't care what happens to them'.

Especially around this time of year, anti-Muslim sentiment goes up.

Problem with that is, do it often enough and you get criticized for interventionist policies and for being the world police.  When you can't be everywhere saving everyone at once people (rightly or wrongly) question your motives.  And when a 9/11 event happens people say it's because of your interventionist foreign policy.

I just hope Russia follows through with what they say they are going to do. Then we won't have to get involved militarily.
