Storm and Flood in Houston
« on: August 27, 2017, 02:43:01 pm »
I've heard on the radio that there's storm and flood warning in Houston.

Does anyone live in that area? Are you Okay?

Well, I am at work and have been there continuously for the past 36 hours. I was asked to come in to keep an eye on the facility during the storm. I was supposed to be relieved this morning, but due to all the flooding they couldn't make it in and I couldn't make it out. Don't worry about me, though; I have a sleeping bag, an air mattress, a couple changes of clothes, there's plenty of non-perishable food in the supply cabinet, and the emergency generator has a full tank of fuel.

Not so sure about the situation at home; I understand from my tenant (who lives upstairs in the garage apartment) that there is water in the garage and utility room. Fortunately the main house is older pier and beam construction and should be OK. Looks like I will be making a small flood claim, though; I do have flood insurance even though the house was supposed to be out of the 100 year flood plain.

My parents are also still dry although they're trapped on their street; there's water at either end. My sister in Magnolia is still dry as well although she says that the water is rising in her backyard.

An unfortunate ripple effect is that it looks as if we'll have to cancel our planned vacation cruise to Alaska, which was supposed to start with a flight to Vancouver on September 6th. But, that's why you buy trip insurance. I do regret it, though, as my parents are getting to the age where they can't travel as much anymore. This was supposed to be our last long trip together as a family. Oh, well.

I'm glad to hear that you and yours are okay. So far I haven't heard from many of the people I known in Houston (some of whom probably evacuated) and with predictions of 40-60 inches of rain in parts of the Houston area, I'm concerned. I remember when a topical storm stalled out over the Hill Country northwest of San Antonio and dumped 35 inches of rain over 3 days. That was awful. I can't even imagine 50-60 inches falling in a fairly flat/low area.

Stay safe.

That's a bummer about the trip, because it sounds like you'll NEED a little vacation after all this! Glad you're doing alright otherwise, though.

That's sad to hear, I hope it can be rescheduled somehow.

And, do you know what? I'm well taken care of. Yes, there's not much in the bank right now, but a paycheck with twenty-plus hours of overtime is due day after tomorrow. I've got food in the freezer and all my bills are current; I'm even leaving with my parents on an Alaska cruise four weeks from now. More than that, I've got hope. Exactly how much hope you might be able to guess with a few searches right here on this board, but I'll just say that in my opinion trials and tribulations are temporary. Rewards are eternal. I'll wait as long as it takes for the faith to turn to sight.

Well, you can scratch the bit about the Alaska cruise, for now. Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey has inundated my home town, flooded my garage (but not my house), closed all the roads, trapped my parents in their subdivision (but their house, at least, is still dry), and wrecked all of our plans for travel. I canceled the cruise today. However, the cruise insurance company will not pay because our homes have not been "rendered uninhabitable". (Probably. I'm filing a claim, anyway. There is a distinct possibility that, to avoid bad PR, they might cough up something. So, no prejudice against them until their final decision is made.)

And, do you know what? I'm happy!

Not at the loss of the cruise; I was looking forward to it. Certainly not at the devastation directed at my home town; it's a catastrophe. But because I distinctly recognize the symptoms of spiritual attack. Somebody Down There Hates Me.

You see, the last time I had a shindig like this planned the very same thing happened. My birthday is June 2; on June 4, 2016, I planned a party at the Galveston Railroad Museum where I sometimes volunteer. I had food arranged, cake, train rides for the guests...quite a few were planning to come. The morning of the planned event...well, Google "Historic Flooding Galveston June 2016".

One time might well have been a coincidence...although I didn't think so; while I hadn't told any human soul I was secretly hoping that my Girlfriend might just choose to make an appearance. Two so similar washouts just before major life events...sorry, you just aren't going to convince me that the underlying cause is anything other than the fact that Somebody Down There still considers me to be a threat. And I find that quite encouraging. I have some news for him:

I have not yet begun to fight.

I canceled the cruise today.

I'm so sorry. I know how much you were looking forward to it.  :(
I've been busy the last couple of days but I have been thinking about all my friends in Texas. I'm glad you are (relatively) safe. I pray

A friend of mine unfortunately lost his life.

With the huricane, the flooding and the blackout, he got a very bad episode of PTSS (he served several times in Irak). His wife had called the police to help her find him but by the time they did it was too late.  :'( He spent a couple of days in the hospital, went through several surgeries, but the damage was just too great. Our online community was shattered but its beautiful to see how so many people, seperated by such dstances and who in most cases have never met in person, can be so caring and supportive in an event like this.
You're only given a little spark of madness, you mustn't lose it.

A Reminder:
Hi, Eric, Vixen, and Sorcha,

Just so you know, I've split these posts off from the intro thread they were posted in, and moved them into the existing news thread about Hurricane Harvey. While I am including a gentle reminder about paying attention to where you are on the forums, none of you are in any trouble about it; it was a pretty clear case of natural topic drift (generally fine by TC's rules, but in a forum in which we try to limit it when it's not convo directly with the OP or about what the OP said). So this note is mostly just to avert confusion about threads not being the way people recalled them being.

And the plot thickens! My mother just called trying to fix me up with a "nice, Christian lady" of about my own age. [She's the one who had me put in the mental hospital.] Can you say, "distraction"?

We must be getting closer.

I'm from Texas, but I don't live there now. I know a lot of people that lost their homes, but everyone I know is safe. It's been weird not being there, honestly. I feel like so many people, in Texas and throughout the country, have been so supportive and generous to others.

Update 2017-12-27: I have to unsay all the hard words I have spoken about the cruise insurance company. It took four months (largely because of the delay in receiving paperwork on my flood insurance claim from an unrelated company), but they have paid off our cruise cancellation fee in full. The check arrived the day after Christmas. I am completely satisfied (not to mention somewhat surprised!) with how I have been treated. I will be using them again, and you may consider this a personal endorsement for Travelex travel insurance services.
