Stephen Hawking, famed physicist, dead at 76

Stephen Hawking, the famed theoretical physicist who defied a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to live virtually his entire adult life with the disease – in a wheelchair and paralyzed but making constant contributions to a world few could understand – has died at age 76, a family spokesman said.

Although Hawking may have been incapacitated physically, he managed to write books, including the best seller "A Brief History of Time," teach physics and mathematics, deliver speeches and even float in zero gravity, all while working in the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity.

He was not modest about what he wanted to do. "My goal is simple," he once said. "It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

From the Daily Mail: For Hawking, the search was almost a religious quest — he said finding a 'theory of everything' would allow mankind to 'know the mind of God.'

Very sad news. I read a Brief History of Time when it first came out. I still have a copy around here somewhere. I know it survived a couple of huge book culls.

No ordinary person in Britain would use that - don't think I've ever seen any of my business contacts use it either. dd/mm/yy is absolutely universal here.

I've favored big-endian date notation for personal use for almost forty years now (it is 201803152219, and I am letting my geek flag fly ), though on things where others need to be able to parse the date I still use British (and Canadian) little-endian notation (15 Mar '18, 15/03/18). USian mixed-endian notation (03/15/18) has never struck me as being sensible.

He was one of those proverbial giants that future generations will stand on the shoulders of, and humanity owes a great debt of gratitude for expanding our understanding of the universe. He was also a testament to the strength of the human spirit, a man who triumphed and flourished through terrible adversity with high spirits and a warm heart. A thousand of bread, of beer, and of every good thing that comes forth from the mouth of the Netjer.
