But then there's this:

...which can be quickly summarized as: "I tried to take away other people's rights, and now they and their friends don't like me. WAAAAAAAAAAA!"

This takedown of the above clip is beyond hysterical:

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I believe so. And Northern Ireland is a really strange exception, sandwiched between two countries to which it is 'related' that allow same-sex marriage, but not allowing it itself. I can't the situation lasting there very long. (Although I may be under-estimating their religious conservatism - which is rather legendary.)
A year ago, I'd have been cynical, but even there I'm cautiously optimistic.

It only failed by two votes in April.  The crucial factor is probably the Ulster Unionists.  The Democratic Unionist Party (they of "save Ulster from sodomy" infamy) are a lost cause.  But even though only four UUP voted in favour this time, the fact they held a free vote is promising.  It means that a unionist veto is no longer going to happen on this issue and as younger unionists come into prominence I think things well look up.

We're starting to see a break from the association between LGBT rights and the nationalist parties.  Obviously, good on Sinn Féin and the SDLP for supporting it, but that particular association was holding things back in the unionist communities.

(To give credit where it's due, the PUP have supported LGBT rights for some time.  It's interesting to note that they're one of the most working class unionist parties in terms of their base).

How inspiring that an oppressed minority, such as those who disagree with same-sex marriage, can be so brave and honest. Absolutely ridiculous.

I'm sure the same kind of people opposed women's suffrage, but now the equal right to vote is such a common feature of our secularized society that it seems normal, even though I'm sure the dominant religious institutions weren't happy about it at the time. They'll get over it. When church membership has declined to the point that they are desperate for people, the Catholic Church will be happy to perform same-sex marriages, just to stay relevant. I doubt that time is very far away.

You want ridiculous? Here's ridiculous. ;) Actually I think it's pathetic. I almost feel sorry for her for being so indoctrinated. Almost, but not quite.

It's gone completely viral. She took down her page but not before it was uploaded to Youtube by someone, and got spread around.

I look at it this way too...

It is pathetic. I don't know how people expect to be taken seriously when they argue so hysterically and ineloquently.

Evangelical Christianity is such a strong cultural force in the US that it leads people to believe the country was founded of the laws of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, which I don't think was the case. I can't even think of biblical passages that specifically outline exactly what a marriage should be, as there seems to be quite the spectrum, although there are some delightful passages from Genesis to the writings of Paul that explain how a woman must submit to her husband's rule. I'm not sure just what appeals to women about traditional marriage, but these kinds of Christians have a way of adjusting traditions that are inconvenient for them, while persecuting those who don't follow their narrow-minded interpretation of scripture.

Too bad the Episcopalian Church is a really small denomination in the US, as apparently their bishops just voted to approve same-sex wedding liturgies. There are some Christian groups in the US who are actually not crazy, but they are always in the minority.

They fall back on the Genesis verses http://biblehub.com/genesis/1-27.htm for one man-one woman marriage, but I don't see anything like that. Of course God created male and female. Uh duh! Dem dare Crischuns ken be so dum. I used to be one of them, but I got help. :p As far as the US being founded on the bible, your guess is as good as mine. It's just a line of schlock that's been passed down.

A Reminder:
Hi, all,

Just a reminder that, tempting though it might be to mock the anti-ssm contingent on the religious grounds that many of them use to (attempt to) support their position, our rule about 'DO NOT make blanket condemnations of... religions' applies here just as it does elsewhere on TC. Not all anti-ssm people are Christian; not all Christians are anti-ssm; and being dismissive of people's intellectual capacity is still ad hominem and gets into 'personal attack' territory (and is awfully likely, unless phrased carefully, to imply that intellectual limitation is a character flaw).

I'm singling Thorbjorn's post out only in that it's the one that most overtly approaches being a violation - the thread as a whole has been gradually moving in a problematic direction, and Thorbjorn was just taking the next step in sequence. Rein it in a bit, folks!
