They'd have to move off the continent in order to escape now. :P Didn't Mexico recently legalize gay marriage too?

Essentially yes. In several Mexican states, SSM is legal; because of the peculiarities of their federal system, the court challenges still have to be brought state by state, for now. But because of their Supreme Court's earlier decision, those challenges are guaranteed to win; plus a same-sex marriage legally performed in one state must be recognized anywhere in Mexico, making the whole thing rather moot.

So North America is completely a marriage equality zone, and the zone is expanding rapidly throughout the Americas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recognition_of_same-sex_unions_in_South_America).

Am I correct that in the English-speaking world, Australia is now the only holdout? (and Northern Ireland; though that's not an independent, sovereign nation)

I just fail to see why they talk about moving so much. I mean, I get that they don't approve- I mean, whatever, man- but to be so outraged by it that they actually talk about moving to another country? Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me. And don't they threaten to do this *every* time something doesn't go their way? You'd think they'd just do it and stop the drama.

I found this conservative Christian reaction interesting. Almost refreshing.

The author shows us what it looks like to lose (dare I say it) gracefully.  And how to engage people in a graceful rather than condemnatory manner.

Nice find.  Sharing it.

Just hanging this here.

My (super conservative) mother changed her facebook avatar to rainbow and told me she did it specifically for me. I might cry.

Gee,how oppressed *were* LBGT people down there that to have a crust such as this thrown is seen as either interesting or refreshing? Seriously. While the church still refers to 'us' and 'them' and maintains being gay is a 'sin', than only the appearance is being asked to change, not the beliefs.

"How much participation do we encourage before we ask them to adopt the Christian sexual ethic?"

Excuse me? So, how many bake sales do church people allow gay people to bring cake to until the good folk try to engage gay people on the 'sin' of their sexuality and get them to change their evil ways?

I'm not trying to be mean. But it surprises me that this piece of condescension is seen as something positive. It's the same old crap wrapped in self-rightous ribbons.

I'll disagree. I neither desire nor require conservative Christian churches to change their views on marriage (though it would be nice). But rather than the embittered resistance to the new reality of same-sex marriage I've been hearing from various evangelical quarters, this is a much more constructive response.

But then there's this:

...which can be quickly summarized as: "I tried to take away other people's rights, and now they and their friends don't like me. WAAAAAAAAAAA!"

I almost had to grab a tissue just reading that. There have been a lot of moments like that lately. Lovely moments.

I'm so happy for you and your mom!

Wow. That video. That's just...embarrassing:eek:

I agree and I disagree. What someone thinks of the marriage ceremony as a stand alone, you're right, who cares? But that article started with " We lost this one". Meaning there was something to lose or win. What I get from the article is "We lost this battle, but not the war". This article is in no way a reconciliation or rapprochement . As I read it, it is still decrying a gay orientation as a 'sin' and treating gay people as both humanly and religiously flawed. End of. There's no coming back from that. That someone is being 'nice' about having their attempt to deny people their rights and freedoms is not nearly enough.
I get a terrible 'we will just bide our time and play nice' vibe from it.
But then, I'm from a different culture and still laughing about the great non-apocalypse that happened when marriage equalization was enshrined up here in Kanuckistan.

Heh.  I could see the positivity of it, but the line that made me stop and go, "Yeah, no" was:

"Now that we have lost on the issue of gay marriage, that threat is removed and it may not be long before we see more willingness to engage us as fellow human beings."

Because the problem is that the gay people aren't willing to engage the conservative Christians as fellow human beings.

I believe so. And Northern Ireland is a really strange exception, sandwiched between two countries to which it is 'related' that allow same-sex marriage, but not allowing it itself. I can't the situation lasting there very long. (Although I may be under-estimating their religious conservatism - which is rather legendary.)

Though I didn't need a tissue, I did find that touching too!

My aunt had a same sex marriage recently, and even before but especially ever since, I have basically zero problem with gay marriage. Good thing this decision was made.

I got a radar for bullshit, it goes DING when there's crap, and that sentacne is making it ring like an alarm clock.

Where have we heard that before? Reversing the status of victimhood so that the oppressed are made to sound like the oppressor?

Oh, right. Every bigot of any stripe ever. Yeah, that's it.

Knew it sounded familiar.

Interesting fact: one of the Han Emperors was openly homosexual. Though he married and begot an heir out of duty, he was said to have told courtiers beforehand that the thought of sex with a woman made him feel ill.

And there were also the male lovers. So...

I'm telling ya... where do they come up with this stuff, The History Channel?

Come up with what? That the Han emperor was gay? That's in Sima Qian's writings.

No, the rest of the stuff. Your post about the Han emperor shows how idiotic and ignorant Roberts's comment was. I neglected to mention that. :o
