And a friend of mine and her partner in the Austin area managed to get married yesterday. Another friend of mine in San Antonio and his partner are planning to marry in early August. Very good effects here in Texas already, as most county clerks seem to be ignoring the state Attorney General's request that they not issue marriage licenses to same sex couples until he issues rules and forms for it (which he is probably in no hurry to do because he's a strong opponent of gay marriage -- he's a Tea Party Republican like our governor).

This is so great. Congrats to everyone who can get married as of yesterday! And today is Pride in London, and I expect they'll be celebrating for their American friends! I could not go as I have to work which is a bit depressing. :(

It's very bad of me to make this about me, but SJ and I have been waiting for this decision for years. SJ is a US citizen and we've always wanted to at least try living in America. Whether we actually will or not, I don't know, but it still made us very happy.

My friends list contains a few people being anarchists and resisting celebrating this, because they don't want to celebrate the state telling them who they can love. And shouting at me for being pleased. I dunno. That makes my head spin and make me feel like a bad activist and get very tired. So I'm trying not to engage with it too much.

For what it's worth, Nay, those sorts of people drive me bloody spare, too.

The state is the ultimate enforcer of legal contracts; there is no way of having the state entirely uninvolved in one's legal contracts and have them be relevantly legal.  Having access to legal contracts is not the same damn thing as "the state telling them who they can love", and it's a weird conflation.  (And politically dangerous, since it primarily supports people who want state involvement interfering in private relationships.)

I snapped a photo of the celebration here in NYC yesterday evening, outside the Stonewall Inn, widely considered the birthplace of the modern gay civil rights movement.

It was quite the party!

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

In a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court has held that gays have the same right to marry as non-gays.

Form the New York Times:

Good news, IMHO.

It's wonderful that all couples can now have equal rights and privileges under the law in the US.

10 years later than you Canadians got if federally. What can I say--your neighbor is a little slow on the uptake sometimes.

Yes, I've been biting my tongue on remarks related to that, that might seem a little too smug. And thus haven't posted to the thread yet.

I really loved your pic of the celebration outside the Stonewall Inn, though. So very appropriate.

Well, we only got full rights to equal marriage a year ago. I do find it amusing when we do progressive things even just a bit ahead of the U.S. though. We're supposed to be so stuffy and conservative and ruled by our state church. :D

This made me laugh at all the anti-gay marriage folks were announced they were "moving to Canada" after the SCOTUS decision. They are so out of touch with reality that they apparently have no idea that Canada allows gay marriage.

Jo Walton once said that a state church serves as a useful inoculation that helps to protect people against more virulent strains. ;)

I think what happened is a couple hundred years ago you all sent most of your religious wingnuts to the colonies, and they bred here instead of there.

I think that's exactly what happens.

I dunno. I think you underestimate the space in the world for religious wingnuts. You should have met my Welsh revival chapel great-grandfather. Would have made today's US Christians look like heathens. (Small h heathens though.)

They'd have to move off the continent in order to escape now. :P Didn't Mexico recently legalize gay marriage too?

I just fail to see why they talk about moving so much. I mean, I get that they don't approve- I mean, whatever, man- but to be so outraged by it that they actually talk about moving to another country? Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me. And don't they threaten to do this *every* time something doesn't go their way? You'd think they'd just do it and stop the drama.

I'm surprised my Canadian friend isn't gloating. It's freaking ridiculous.

But let them gloat, they've kinda earned it. U.S. is behind the times.

I intend to save up all that gloating, and then get my fair shair in when the Aussies legalize, predicted next year. My Aussie friends (mostly friends of the family) like to rub in how ridiculous the Yanks are... vengeance will be sweet.

All in good fun, of course. I'm the sort who snarks most about the things most important. The first thing I thought when reading the SC decision was "Yah! So ordered!"

The second was Sassy Gay Jyggalag saying "This room is, like, SO ordered!" So, yeah. Joke about the important thing.

Sorry for not making sense, sleep is not here.

Celebration is!

I said exactly that many years back when I was in Europe on a tour, and the guide kept ending every visit to a cathedral with a snarky comment about how Europeans don't pay much attention to religion, unlike religiously rabid Americans.

Yeah, if you export all your worst religious extremists to faraway lands where their brand of crazy can take root unimpeded and flourish...sure. Then your approach to religion will be placid and benign, by comparison.
