Particles Found to Travel Faster Than Speed of Light

Wow.  If this is confirmed, it could turn our whole foundation of thought on its head.  Maybe this is part of the reason why no one's been able to put together a really good Theory of Everything--one of the premises might be false.

What an exciting time in which we live!

Truly exciting! This discovery - if true - makes time travel a possibility based on the current notion that if you go faster than the speed of light you can travel back in time.

I know, right?  This just reminds me of the four minute mile.  We don't seriously consider the possibility of time travel or warp speed because of our basic assumptions.  But once we know something's possible (running a four minute mile), then all kinds of new breakthroughs are possible because we're not putting up a barrier.

I suspect that like most of the previous observations of faster than light effects some unaccounted for factor will be found that reduces the measured speed. The fact that neutrinos in the wild don't seem to do this is a large "wait and see" flag to me.

Absolutely.  I'm not throwing out my Einstein wallpaper yet, but it's always exciting to think about witnessing a total shake-up of our foundation of thought, to find out where such a new track could take us.

The research into neutrinos and what they are and how they behave seems to be the talk of the town amongst the particle physicists right now.  So much of it is well over my head, but I try to pick out of it what I can.

I'm really interested in unification, to see if there is an underlying pattern behind it all.  I still believe that Life, the Universe, and Everything is like a fractal, that patterns are repeated on the micro to the macro level.  I just don't think the rules change at the quantum level, but we just haven't developed the proper mathematics for a ToE yet.

That's why I find peace in my sig statement.

I agree -- I just have learned to wait for further information and corroboration. I've seen too many supposedly FTL effects during my lifetime turn out to not really be so in the end to get excited this early in the game.

"That"? The original article? the cartoon? (This is why quoting is important.)

Apparently he meant the cartoon.  I checked his post and the quote was there, but not properly done.

It was a case, again, of leaving the opening and closing code on the same line after deleting the content.

Would it be possible for a reminder of this to be included in the answer screen?  On the old board Quick Reply had quoting instructions that would appear when you clicked it - something like that maybe, as a tip or reminder?

Marilyn

PS:  I didn't fix it because it has been referred to directly - staying on the same page and all that. :)

I'll look into adding something like. Finding where to add in vBulletin's morass of templates will probably be the hard part.

If you completely eliminate the quoted text, the opening and closing QUOTE BBCode tags have to be on separate lines or the quote disappears from the post.
