Irish President signs Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill into law

The act legally gives a woman access to an abortion where there is a real and substantial risk to her life, including risk of suicide.

This suicide clause – part 9 of the bill – was one of the most contentious parts of the legislation, with a number of TDs and Senators tabling amendments that would have removed this section or substantially altered it.

However, these amendments were all defeated.

Congrats on the change in your country, Cág. How has this new law been accepted in Ireland, from what you can tell?

I think so, it's interesting because the pro-life people were actually going crazy during the process and doing some pretty horrible stuff. It was especially shocking because normally our country doesn't experience that level of fundamentalist religious backlash, we just don't have it here.
Most of it was coming from the U.S., from groups who send large amounts of money to fund campaigns which have frankly wrong information. They even flew in hundreds to participate in demonstrations here :confused:
They were caught out fairly quickly when the accents were the noticeable majority in the crowd XD
They've since disappeared largely but we're expecting attempts to challenge it in court so we'll just have to see how it plays out.
