Can Black Lives Matter and Police Lives Matter coexist?
« on: September 13, 2015, 01:25:07 pm »
"Community members held a Police Lives Matter march in Houston Saturday in honor of slain Texas Deputy Darren Goforth. Is there room for both this movement and Black Lives Matter in national discourse?"

Ah, yes, because we have a cultural history of treating police deaths as just what they deserved, right?  If they wanted to be treated like heroes and be given effectively state funerals maybe they shouldn't have been thugs, right?

Oh, wait, that's actually the default response to police deaths in the line of duty.  Woops.  Carry on.

I think the point of this article is that there is a deep divide in this country between people who will support the police whatever they do and those who think a good number of the police are just in it to be able to harass, beat up, and/or kill people they consider beneath them with near immunity to any consequences. Can the police be reigned in with this divide and how might it happen given this divide?

The article is founded in some pretty disingenuous bullshit.  It doesn't matter whether the police intent is to get away with literal murder; the current structure of the system makes it so that they can and do, on a routine basis, and if the victim is black people will say, "Well, he probably did something to deserve it" unless there's overwhelming evidence - and even in the face of cases with that overwhelming evidence, the police often get off.  (The police also often get off when there are white victims, but less routinely so; authority-worship is compounded by racism.)

Nobody has ever suggested that police lives don't matter (except maybe the occasional criminal who wants to kill one, and I'd actually argue that killing a cop in specific is precisely because that person matters, because otherwise they wouldn't be a target in the first place), so the only reason to make a movement of it is to make sure that that sort of divide is maintained and widened.

"Black Lives Matter" actually is an attempt to rhetorically level the playing field, to point out that these discarded humans who are commonly treated as "Well, if they died, they must have deserved it" are in fact people with the same basic lives as those who murder them.  Because it is an undeniable fact that black lives are not treated as if they matter in this country, not in the same way that other lives matter.

I can't help but think of Altair's "How I will die" piece here.
