Nobody's heard from him?  Damn.

Some friends of mine weathered the storm in their little rental chalet in Vermont.  They live in Ludlow, one of the places horribly flooded during Irene last year.  They (smartly) headed for the hills.  I just heard from them and they're fine.  Actually had a romantic evening without power around their wood stove.

I woke up this morning and checked the news sites. It doesn't like like it is as bad as some of the more terrible predictions. I hope all TC members and their family/friends in the area are riding out the storm safely.

We lost power for a few hours yesterday afternoon, and have a branch down over part of the driveway.  Friends near here have lost power as well, don't know if it's up yet - one called last night and got told he could come over today if he wanted to get somewhere where the lights turn on and the microwave works.

Our power is still out.  Eta on fix unknown.  There's been lots of downed trees and stuff.  Posting from restaurant.   Finally have coffee, only serious problem so far.

But if not, cars can be brought back to life if they don't wash away, gardens replanted, basements bailed out...etc. Keep those humans and animals in one piece and we'll see you after the 'event'.

This is what I was telling my mom. I told her as she was scrambling to save things and panicking that many of the things could be replaced. She kind of threw a fit. Oh well. Nothing really happened here. We almost lost power in our area but we have a generator prepped.

Only thing I had to deal with was a very scared Elkhound.

Well. I'm alive, anyway. My neighborhood got pretty apocalyptic, however.

Manhattan took a bad blow, and the East Village, where I live, was one of the harder hit neighborhoods (underscored by the exploding power plant 3 blocks from my apartment: BOOM! And then lights out). The East River rose up in the storm surge and took over the streets--my block was knee deep--something I didn't think was possible. You could have kayaked through the streets of lower Manhattan. Literally.

Then there's our building's basement: flooded, floor to ceiling. The folks in the first floor apartments missed being flooded by about 6 inches. The water has receded, mostly, but I haven't gotten in the basement yet. I'm assuming all our valuables stored down there are a total loss. (That comic book collection dating from 1979, including original Byrne/Claremont X-MEN issues? Kiss it goodbye.)

The boiler is done, so no heat or hot water. No land lines, either; the phone lines run through the basement. No power anywhere below 40th St. The subways will take at least a week for full service to be restored, and probably as long for power to my neighborhood. My office was closed yesterday and today, but I'm actually here anyway, since there's power, e-mail, and Internet access, so I can find out what the hell is going on and recharge my cell and personal laptop while I'm at it.

NYC's worst hit since 9/11. But at least me and mine are all safe and sound.

The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

This is good news. Do you have somewhere to stay until you get power restored in your building?

I'm so glad you're safe. When I saw everything that was going on in Manhattan, I was really worried about you. How did your garden hold up?

Thanks, Catherine and everyone, for the well wishes.

The roof garden, as it turns out, was the least of our worries. I guess because we have so much experience with lesser wind events up there, we've gotten adept at windproofing and generally securing things.

We may tough it out in the powerlessness, since at least I've got access to power in the office; if not, I have family in the area, and we have tons of generous friends in the powered zones. It'll be a gigantic pain in the ass either way, but, in the big scheme of things, we really aren't bad off at all. Inconvenienced mostly, and there are folks in other places hurting far worse for far longer. So no more whining!
