Anyone here in Sandy's Path?
« on: October 28, 2012, 04:51:13 pm »
I'm on the east coast and I'm moderately concerned about the upcoming hurricane. I've experoenced weather that was supposed to be severe, but wasn't and weather that was supposed to be mild but wasn't.

Needless to say I'm cautious about this weather. I'm hoping everyone here that's in the path of the hurricane is doing well. Stay safe and hope there isn't too much damage.

I'm in one of Manhattan's mandatory evacuation zones, as I was when Hurricane Irene hit last year. And they're shutting down the mass transit system beginning at 7 PM.

I'm not going anywhere. The worry is flooding in the low-lying areas, and it's pretty much guaranteed that the basement of my building will flood. But I live on the fifth floor, so my bigger concern is making sure my roof garden survives the wind; I can do that a lot better here on premises.

My building is only a few yards away from *not* being in the mandatory evac zone, so it's a little hard to get too worked up about it.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Not in the path per se, but we're expecting some of the outer winds and rains to hit around midnight tonight. I'm in southwestern Virginia and we're being warned about power outages and stuff. Storms really freak me out so I'm trying not to panic like a wuss. :ashamed:
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.

I'm on the very edge of the target zone for high winds (on the inland side) in Massachusetts.  I'm not huuugely concerned, though power failures are predicted; my housemate on the other hand is a little agitated.  We should probably put some bricks on the lid to the kids' sandbox and their play slide, though.

I'm glad the oaks have dropped a big chunk of their remaining leaves, though.  Last year we had snow on Hallowe'en and it took down sooo many branches because that was the first frost!

I'm in the Washington, DC, area, halfway between DC and Baltimore on the I-95 corridor, so it's headed pretty much right at us.  At the moment, it's cool and breezy and just starting to rain a little.

I'm not too worried, tho, since we're not on the coast.  My biggest concern is losing power.

Pretty much this, except replace 'southwestern' with 'southeastern.'  And I get to go out in it when it's at its worst.  Yay:(

Hey, neighbor.

Yep, all this. Personal safety not much of a concern, house is battened against any likely heavy rain. Main pain in the butt is going to be the power loss.

I'm up on the very northern edge: I am sensibly parking my car not under the tree-what-might-lose-limbs, and I won't be terribly surprised if we lose power for a bit. (Small town: we had .. 5? short-term outages last year, only 2 of which were actually storm related. We were hit moderately hard by Irene, so the local hope seems to be that inland, at least, all the branches likely to come down anytime soon already have.

I am keeping a close eye on the storm, since I have a number of friends (and some family) strewn between DC and Boston.

Erm...yeah, how is that supposed to work, exactly? How do they expect people to evacuate without transportation? And where do they want people to go?

I was thinking this too. Our public transit system isn't going to be working all day Monday. I called work to let them know I can't make it in and they want me to find a way there. There has already been an announcement to tell all non-state/essential
workers to stay home and not go to work. My job is a corporate jack hole and they don't care. During the snowstorm last year they stayed open despite not having any power in the stores. They risked their employees dying on the road and so on just for a small profit.

For Gods' sake there is an evacuation in place. People these days.

I'm in the southern part of the 'Snowicane' zone.  What we'll see of Sandy here is likely a few inches of snow, high winds, and the potential for major power outages.

I am in Brooklyn at my mothers apt.  She found three 'D' cell flashlights and called me just before my service at 11 AM to get batteries, Yesterday I got her 'C' batteries (and extras) for four flashlights, and she has one that you shake.

I found the 'D' batteries but no extras.  She now has eight flashlights, it was just her and the her cat.  I do not know why she needs that many.

I am here and have two flashlight of my own  that makes ten in the place.

Only relatively few miles from you, in Virginia Beach.  11 PM Sunday Eastern as I write this. Been steady rain and some wind. Lost power twice so far, both times briefly in the AM. 2ndary road to the highway is flooded and closed.

Got my yard stuff stored, doesn't look like my neighbors have done much though.

Snowicane sounds so much better than Frankenstorm. The flow is much better.

I don't know.  It's large, slow, and inspires panic in everyone in its path, so Frankenstorm fits.  Plus not everyone is going to get snow from it.
