My understanding is the mom works 2 jobs.  And probably not because she wants to.  So the option of a sitter might have been cost prohibitive.  

Generally I'm not for capital punishment, but I wouldn't mind it if this filth got the firing squad.

I checked out other articles on this poor girl and she's now nine months pregnant and will be giving birth any day now. I do hope, since this mother and child are the innocent victims here, that the baby is healthy.

This guy seriously needs to be introduced as a paedophile and rapist to the general poulation of whatever prison he is put in.##I hope that the poor child and her mother get through this and that the birth goes ok.

No idea really.  I've heard everything from age 12 to 15, but it probably varies by state.  

Lots of challenges facing that little baby.  Life won't be easy.

In many places, 11 is a normal age to stay home alone - heck I was babysitting all over my neighbourhood by 11 myself.

It varies by state, but in many cases cannot be enforced as some stated have no social safety net. If the parent(s) can't afford day care because they are working 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs just to provide food, shelter, and clothing, there's not much that can really be done. Judges aren't likely to take the children away (really the only recourse as you cannot effectively order parents to spend money they do not have) because working is considered infinitelyu more important than child-raising for the poor, especially in red states (the ones without real social safety nets for the most part).
