"Interfaith" Prayer Service
« on: November 19, 2013, 07:29:34 pm »
So, the other day, I was inquiring about helping out with an interfaith service a Catholic group was planning, and the woman planning it was going on and on about interfaith dialogue, and then I told her I was Pagan and she said that The Church does not recognize Paganism as an actual faith.:whis:
I mean, in hindsight it's a little funny, but whenever she mentions it to other people, it stings a little...

Has anything like this ever happened to any of you?

Well technically she is correct. 'Paganism' and 'Pagan' are umbrella terms which indicate a set of faiths with some similarities rather than a specific religion.

That said, the recognition process for religions within the Pagan sphere is typically and unfairly slow.

This is a problem in the UK at the moment. Pagan faiths of various kinds, including Druid and Wiccan groups, are being denied admittance to the national Interfaith Network. Local interfaith events can be a bit more inclusive, but it depends on the area and the attitude of the major faiths there.

There is progress happening - for example, the Church of England has recently removed policy documents from its website that represented many Pagan faiths as dangerous. It's slow progress, though. This is a sociology of religion issue - many major religious groups have had issues with New Religious Movements for a long time, and change is only going to happen slowly.

I started reporting on this on Divine Community recently (my podcast). That's on hiatus, but if there are big developments I'll bring it out of hiatus to report on them.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't taken pagan religions seriously, and that sucks. But I've been lucky enough to be a part of interfaith communities that do!

No sarcasm here--good for you!
...and yes, it does suck, especially when said people still want you to help plan the service...
