Dragons Of Eden
« on: June 19, 2019, 06:54:47 pm »
I was wondering of there were any Carl Sagan fans out there? I have not read any of his books lately, but I used to read "Dragons Of Eden" over and over again back in the day. It is my favorite Sagan book. I also like "Demon Haunted World" a lot as well. Sagan's work is what led me to study Science at the University.

I think that I might have posted this to the wrong forum. Maybe staff could move it to "Books and Web Sites" in the Social Discussion Forum?

[Thanks for moving the Thread, Randall.]

Sagan is interesting on Religion. I believe that he was an Atheist. Still, he asserted that maybe a Religion could be based upon the wonder and awe of the Cosmos and Nature as seen through the lens of Science.

I think he might have been open to a sort of Scientific Pantheism that is free of superstition and imaginary elements. I do not think he would approve of the idea of gods/goddesses or personified deities. Certainly not any belief in magic.

Myself, I am a Scientific Pantheist, but in that context I am also a student of Human Culture and Civilization. There have always been personified deities in Human Culture as far as I know. As a Religious Humanist, I acknowledge and respect that fact. It is a fact of social science.

So, for me a reverence for the Cosmos, Nature, and Humankind, and also a respect for Human Cultures that assert an idea of Deity/Deities.
