Thinking about possibly joining the ADF
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:32:59 pm »
In recent months I've felt very called to Druidry, especially the ADF. However I'm not sure if the ADF is for me or not and I was wondering if people could help me out.

I'm solitary and have absolutely no desire to join a grove. Also, I lead a pretty busy lifestyle and wonder if I would actually have time to really be dedicated to study (as I've heard study is pretty key to the dedicate path program), do you need a lot of time to dedicate to learning? Also, I'm a little hesitant about a lot of the ADF ritual structure. It seems very long and drawn out to me. I'm used to more basic, straight to the point rituals. I'm also not really interested in reconstructionism, it's just not something I'm into and it seems the ADF are very recon focused.

Do you think the ADF is for me, or should I look elsewhere to find my place in Druidry?

Study is never mandatory but it's useful. Similarly grove membership is also not a requirement, in fact there is current a very strong solitary movement in ADF you can find out more about here: http://www.solitarydruid.org/

We are reconish that is, we're a valid living religion based on the structure of Proto-Indo-European / Indo-European cultures. Considering the give and take among hearth cultures and the continual evolution and modification of the Core Order of Ritual nothing is static or particularly hidebound ime.

Your may like to join the public lists on the Adf.org site and see what other folks have to say as well :)

It's completely possible to be solitary in ADF - I am, through circumstance (no local groves). There's a new Solitary Druid Fellowship (SDF) that's part of ADF which you might find interesting - they have resources for ritual. ADF ritual is long, but you don't have to do the entire Core Order of Ritual, or you can do a pared-down version that has been developed by SDF - see here.

ADF is not reconstructionist, but it does value scholarship and being clear about what's ancient and what's new. But if you're interested in a completely different approach to druidry, you might find OBOD interesting - full name is the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. They have different history and origins from ADF. They are expensive to join, as you follow a course with them and they send you materials for it - but if you like that style of druidry, there's also the Druid Network which is similar and has lots of free resources online.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details on any of these! :)
