Places to get real mistletoe?
« on: November 25, 2017, 09:48:12 pm »
Wasn't sure exaaaactly which sub to put this in (here? Hazel and Oak? Somewhere else?) but I figured the druidry forum makes enough sense to me.

So, I've been on the lookout for some real mistletoe, which I do know is quite poisonous and would be kept far, far away from my kitties. I want this for the solstice coming up, but I just can't seem to find anything suitable! The craft store I work at got some in this year, which fortunately wasn't moldy and didn't need to just be thrown out like it's been in years past. This year we got a different brand. So, I bought some but discovered that not only does it not have any berries (which I could have dealt with) but it's dried and spray painted a bright, gaudy green to look "fresh". I'll use it if I have to, but I'd rather have something a little more authentic and less Christmas-cash-grabby.

The one other place in the area that might have carried some real stuff recently closed. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might find some, whether that's brick and mortar stores or online? I'm in the southern New England area, if that helps. Thanks!

My very first thought was Etsy.

I was in Trader Joe's this morning doing my grocery shopping, and they had a bucket display with small packages of real mistletoe ($1.99 each, I think.)

Here's the link to their store locator - don't know if there's any close enough to your bit of southern New England to make that feasible for you.

TJ's has variable stock so it's probably a good idea to call ahead to see if they have some.

You might also try higher-end grocery stores or grocery stores with plants/etc. for sale.

I seem to remember Whole Foods having some last year.

I hadn't even thought of that! I was looking on Amazon, almost everything was fake. Thanks!

We have like two grocery stores in my area. Trader Joe's only exists on the other side of the state from me (closer to NYC and anything that matters) and the closest Whole Foods is an hour away. I'll try Aldi's, though. I think they're run by the same company as TJ's? Thanks guys!

Some mistletoe arrived from Maclemore Mistletoe on Etsy today! Nice and fresh with berries intact. Original stuff I bought included in the picture to show the difference. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
