non Celtic hearths in ADF
« on: July 06, 2014, 11:57:44 am »
I think as far as Neopagan organizations go, ADF is a pretty decent one with some good study programs and a trained cadre of clergy.

But ...   as someone who is NOT particularly Celtic in focus, I sometimes feel like my presence is superfluous.

The vast majority of members and leaders seem to be of a Celtic hearth.  I'm not sure if there has ever been an arch druid who wasn't of Celtic hearth?   A few protogroves or groves here and there might subscribe to non-Celtic hearths, but it otherwise seems like a Celtic club.   I also sometimes have problems reconciling ADF's core order of ritual with my own hearth culture and how more reconstructionist-leaning groups of my hearth culture do rituals.

I guess what I am saying is that ADF seems to work best if you want scholarly Celtic Neopaganism, but doesn't work as well if you have another hearth culture.

Anyone else feel this way?

Slavic Hearth culture here, and I know them feels. ADF works with other IE cultures because of a shared framework. I will say that the more popular the hearth culture, the more info you'll have and more support. I'm not overly fond of the COoR, but that could just be my not being fond of pomp and ceremony. I guess it just depends on what you want to get out of it.

At this point I am a solitary, engaged with the organization mostly through its study programs. Not sure if that is enough to keep me involved.  I guess I'll make that determination next time my membership dues are due.  ;)

I know of some local groups that take 2 or 3 hours to conduct a ritual.  That's just lunacy.

I'm also a member of ADF and not big on long, elaborate ceremonies. I feel very at home within the Druid spirituality, but I'm also a solitary who has no interest in going to grove meetings and prefer to do things my own way. The official line from ADF, as you probably know, is that anything goes in your personal practice, but if you're doing a ritual in the name of ADF in public, you have to follow the COoR-- which I almost never do or I modify heavily in my solitary work. I like its scholarly approach and having access to a community so I'll probably renew my membership this year.

Honestly, if OBOD wasn't so expensive for me, I'd probably give them a go as well (you can be members of both) since I hear they take a more philosophical approach and there isn't as much of a conflict with non-IE pantheons.
