Music: Your Most Hated Christmas Song, 2018 Edition

It's time (and then some) for that old Cauldron tradition of having a thread for griping about those cheesy, insipid, overplayed Christmas songs that make us want to get a copy on vinyl or CD for the sheer satisfaction of smashing it to bits. This is that thread!

This year, my main irritation is arrangements of 'I'll Be Home for Christmas' that are as slow as possible, presumably for fear that people won't notice it's wistful unless it's outright dirge-like.

Various uninspired "country" Chrismas songs, especially covers of older, half-decent songs with an artificial, weird country twist put on them.

I mean, a country version of "White Christmas" seems just wrong to me, given that it was composed by Irving Berlin and famously recorded Bing Crosby. Those two men and their styles of music were the antithesis of everything modern country music is about.

What's yours?

"Cover" versions of someone else's medley. I'm thinking especially of "Mary's Boy Child" followed by "Oh My Lord", and "Little Drummer Boy" followed by "Peace On Earth." The first time, it was original and worth doing. The seventeenth time...not so much.

"Little Drummer Boy" is on my naughty list anyway. As I wrote in a previous edition of this same thread, one of my pet peeves is "Any Christmas song which prominently features the words 'baby' or 'boy' in the title or lyrics, UNLESS those words are referring directly to the Christ Child." Yes, I'm thinking of "Santa Baby" and "Baby, It's Cold Outside."

Also, any version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" EXCEPT the one by the Jackson 5. Talk about making a silk purse out of a sow's ear...those kids had talent!
