Your Most Hated Christmas Song, 2014 Edition
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:42:30 pm »
It's an old Cauldron tradition (but one that slipped by the wayside last year) to have a thread for griping about those cheesy, insipid, overplayed Christmas songs that make us want to get a copy on vinyl or CD for the sheer satisfaction of smashing it to bits. This is that thread!

I'll start it off with Bruce Springsteen's take on 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'. No, Bruce, just NO.

What's yours?

E) All of the Above

I just don't like Christmas music.  Never have.  It probably has something to do with being forced to listen to it no matter where you go for a solid two months.  For those who work retail - you have my understanding and sympathy.  I've worked retail during Christmas on several occasions.  The non-stop You-will-be-cheerful-or-else-gritted-teeth-smile aspect of Christmas music has me longing for a nice relaxing strain of nails-on-chalkboard.

For me, Christmas music is right up there with screaming babies and people who feel their cell-phone-conversation-on-speaker-phone-in-the-middle-of-the-store-is-private.  To bastardize a quote, "If you play that music, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."

I accept that there are folks who love this music.  I'm just not one of them.

As someone who holds a New Jersey driver's license I am forbidden by law from disliking anything by Bruce Springsteen.  :P

However, I can(and do) dislike "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" with a fiery passion that burns deep within me.

I've got to second that one, even the version by Kylie Minogue, who I usually love.

Katherine Jenkins makes a rather decent version of it, though.

My pet hate, even beyond Mariah Carey's unadulterated showboating, is the John Mellencamp version of 'I saw momma kissing Santa Claus'.

I don't like Christmas music (which I misspelled initially and spellcheck wanted to change to Masochist...so high-fives for spellcheck) and instead prefer winter-themed ambient music.

(Thanks for starting this thread this year -- I know I normally do it, but I've been too busy to even remember).

As much as I would like to say "ALL OF THEM," even I would grudgingly admit that there are some Christmas songs that I like...mostly the traditional hymns and the deliciously cynical/depressing ones (oh Pogues...where would I be without you...)

I dislike the overly saccharine ones the most (and by that I mean not only sung by a child but the damn thing sounds like it was written for a child singer in mind) but there is one that goes beyond saccharine and into outright glurge territory.

I am of course talking about "The Christmas Shoes."

For those who are lucky to have never even heard of it, (NSFW)

Also "Little Drummer Boy" for that damn "Per-um-pum-pum-pum."

You hit my two most hated ones, Mel.  However, there's a third one that, when added to the mix, makes a lovely trifecta: .

I heard all three in a row on the radio last year, and now I tend to describe it as "Please, Daddy, don't get drunk and steal the Christmas shoes, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum."

Silver Bells. When I lived in NYC I lived near a shopping district and they played that song over and over and over again. I heard pretty much non-stop for weeks. It was torture.
