If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

It's an old Cauldron tradition (but one that slipped by the wayside last year) to have a thread for griping about those cheesy, insipid, overplayed Christmas songs that make us want to get a copy on vinyl or CD for the sheer satisfaction of smashing it to bits. This is that thread!

I'll start it off with Bruce Springsteen's take on 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'. No, Bruce, just NO.

What's yours?

All of them. I utterly despise Christmas. Wish I could just skip December and go straight into January.

But this year I have extra special hatred for the new Band Aid one. This sums up some of my feelings on it. Plus just how ignorant, offensive and racist the whole damn thing is.

I did not now Band Aid was still a thing...especially after 20+ years of every comedian mocking the overblown charity single.  Good for Adele for not feeding into that sort of scum.

*waves* Hi, Lyric!

"Blue Christmas". Pretty much any version. Also, any Christmas song done by the Beach Boys. *shudders*

I'm just about ready to go to bed and suddenly "Little St. Nick" is in my head.  Thanks a lot...

My apologies! I seriously would not inflict that on anyone!

This morning I encountered the song "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas" and detested it immediately.

I am quite fond of older Christmas carols (partly because I love the sound of choirs), but modern compositions not so much.

Oh, Gods I forgot about the hippopotamus song >,<

I love Christmas music. From hymns to sugary Santa, I love it to bits and pieces. I love Springsteen's cover of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, I love Santa Baby (which is sung by Eartha Kitt, HarpingHawke), and I've just recently been introduced to John Mellencamp's cover of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, which I similarly enjoy. From the day after Thanksgiving, to New Year's Day, I turn on the Christmas music in my house and it doesn't go off. Nothing makes me happier than Christmas music.

However.

There are three songs I cannot stand, those being:
  • River -- a whining, self-loathing and depressive ballad about one's lost love which is not at all in the spirit of the holidays.
  • Mary Did You Know? -- Yes, Mary knew most, if not all, of those things. The songwriters were apparently ignorant of the Annunciation.
  • Jason Mraz's cover of Winter Wonderland, which should see him prosecuated for war crimes against Christmas music, and music in general
Christmas Shoes being there is a given.

Mary Did You Know is proof too many Protestants don't read enough of the Bible. What gets me is my Roman Catholic cousin fell in love with the song. I just want to shake him and say, "Don't you pay attention to the Feast of the Annunciation?"

I haven't heard what has to be one of the worst ideas in Christmas music since The Christmas Shoes, but I am given to understand that Michael Buble turned Santa Baby into Santa Buddy. Bad enough it's Michael Buble, the Kenny G of vocal jazz. But making a song that's a clear come-on to Saint Nick into "Hey, pal, no homo but gimme stuff and I'll be a good boy" just makes me twitch to think about it. Let alone risk hearing it. (Full disclosure: I like Santa Baby enough to sing it at karaoke nights. It's over the top in a way I like, and Eartha Kitt can do no wrong by me.)

Other Christmas songs I detest have already been named. I like Christmas music overall, but some people really need a reality check when it comes to writing the stuff.

No hohohomo!

I have another complaint--Last Christmas (I Gave You My Heart). It's horrible.

And, since I'm an obsessive Fannibal, it reminds me of that image that I'm not gonna link to because graphicness. (season one, ep. 11). I laugh because I'm kinda twisted. :whis:

I would totally listen to a song (or read a story) about a guy who is gay for Santa.
