If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

It's an old Cauldron tradition (but one that slipped by the wayside last year) to have a thread for griping about those cheesy, insipid, overplayed Christmas songs that make us want to get a copy on vinyl or CD for the sheer satisfaction of smashing it to bits. This is that thread!

This year it's definitely "Jingle Bell Rock." Never one of my favorites to being with, my chorus has an obnoxious arrangement of it in the winter program this year, complete with five-part harmony and a capella sections. It makes me want to hide under the risers.

On the plus side, we're also doing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch."

Silver Bells. When I lived in NYC I lived near a shopping district and they played that song over and over and over again. I heard pretty much non-stop for weeks. It was torture.

Oh my Stag, that must've been awful. My legal name fits the syllable count in "Silver Bells" and everyone I know replaces it with my legal name and it just ends up being seriously annoying.

Another one I can think of now is Santa Claus is Coming to Town. **shudder**

You hit my two most hated ones, Mel.  However, there's a third one that, when added to the mix, makes a lovely trifecta: .

This. *shudders*  Awful, awful song.

I love Christmas music. From hymns to sugary Santa, I love it to bits and pieces. I love Springsteen's cover of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, I love Santa Baby (which is sung by Eartha Kitt, HarpingHawke), and I've just recently been introduced to John Mellencamp's cover of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, which I similarly enjoy. From the day after Thanksgiving, to New Year's Day, I turn on the Christmas music in my house and it doesn't go off. Nothing makes me happier than Christmas music.

However.

There are three songs I cannot stand, those being:
  • River -- a whining, self-loathing and depressive ballad about one's lost love which is not at all in the spirit of the holidays.
  • Mary Did You Know? -- Yes, Mary knew most, if not all, of those things. The songwriters were apparently ignorant of the Annunciation.
  • Jason Mraz's cover of Winter Wonderland, which should see him prosecuated for war crimes against Christmas music, and music in general
Christmas Shoes being there is a given.

I'll start it off with Bruce Springsteen's take on 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'. No, Bruce, just NO.

I am NOT a fan of that stupid song,"All I want for Christmas are my Two Front Teeth". I mean...*sigh* really?

Baby, It's Cold Outside.

Yes, it is cold outside! That doesn't mean you get to ignore her wishes and slip something in her drink, you creep!

Talk about glorifying boundary and consent violations. Ugh.

And oh my gods it has been played so many times over the past few weeks and I haven't even left the house that much. I'm pretty sure the Christmas Expo I had a table at played it 20 times over the course of the day, and every time I'm in a coffee shop or grocery store or whatever it feels like the song is STALKING ME. Which would be, well, par for the course.
Pray drunk. Hex sober.

This morning I encountered the song "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas" and detested it immediately.

I am quite fond of older Christmas carols (partly because I love the sound of choirs), but modern compositions not so much.

Hey Sunflower!

Little Drummer Boy. In all forms. By all singers. Even instrumental. Doesn't matter how it's done, it still sucks.

We Three Kings is appearing on the list this year, too, though it doesn't give me the willies the way LDB does. It's probably a short timer.

I have another grievance to put on the list (besides Baby, It's Cold Outside--you beat me to it, Morag): Let it Snow. **shudder**

Not really replying to Sunflower but the thread in general: for those who might like it there are Christmas Carols redone by the Crypt Keeper that that's full of enthusiastic and happy hate for all things Christmas (and even throws in lines like "and wait until I get my hands on that Easter bunny!"), or they're an extremely cynical rewrite (such as "Jingle Bells" becoming "Juggle Bills").

And, of course, are the Cthulhu Christmas carols. For example, Joy, er, Death to the World:

Quote
(Lyrics are lower)A little video I made for the song Death To The World, by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society.

This, and the song "The Festival" are my two favorite songs by them.

Death to the world! Cthulhu's come:
Let Earth abhor this thing.
Let every mind prepare for doom,
As anguish and woe he'll bring.

Up from the sea, R'lyeh did rise:
The cultists awestruck dumb.
With ancient rites so wretched and perverse,
Cthulhu's time has come.

Death to the world! Cthulhu reigns.
The Great Old Ones Destroy
With wrath and doom, so cruel and foul,
Replete with obscene joy.
He rules the Earth with dreadful might,
And through our ghastly dreams
His twisting turning tentacles
Elicit from us maddened screams.
Cthulhu's time has come.

I used to play both of those in December...that reminds me, I haven't been playing either of them at all this year, time to turn up the volume and shake the walls! :)

How could I forget a Letter to Santa by Bob Rivers? If you like stories of the Mafia then this is the performance (of a Mafia don writing Santa) for you:

Speaking of which, if you think that's brilliant then you might want to look up "Raging Rudolph" as done by MADTv (a retelling of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer as a violent Mafia story)

Any electronic remixes of christmas songs. You know the type. I like several christmas songs, and I like a lot of electronic music. But do not mix them. Ever.

It's easier for me to say which songs I *do* like. Because I have strong feelings of dislike for MOST of them.
