Your favourite music genre?
« on: July 31, 2011, 04:49:15 pm »
What are your favourite music genres? I would always appreciate a good example of the genre with a video or something similar :)

Mine is folk-metal and the different sub-genres of it (Viking-metal, pagan-metal). I really like this kind of music because it isn't just the same kind of instruments which every popular metal bands have. I also really like the folk-lore in some of the lyrics :D

Some examples:

Rock and metal, without a shadow of a doubt! I love most music, but these are my absolute favourites. There is such variety!

My favorite genre would be probably classic metal.  My favorite band is Iron Maiden, my handle is one of their songs.

If you like viking/pagan metal you should check out Tyr and Turisas if you already haven't.

I go back and forth between a lot of styles.  Generally though, it's either techno (Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren), hard rock (Disturbed, Metallica, etc), and symphony metal (Withim Temptation).

My current favorite song is by Within Temptation (whose last album is phenomenal!):

I enjoy:
    classical music (Mozart, Beethoven, etc.)

some "oldies" rock & roll (the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Three Dog Night, etc.)

some folk music (Peter, Paul & Mary, John Denver (well, I classify him as "folk"; YMMV))

some pop music (it varies on my mood as to whom)

some New Age music (Celtic Woman (although I may be putting them in the wrong category; my leg's being used as a pillow right now, so I can't get up and check), and I-can't-think-of-anybody-else-at-the-moment)

and movie soundtracks (John Williams is one of my personal music gods)

I mostly listen to metal, particularly the "extreme" genres (death and black) though I love classic heavy metal as well. I enjoy a few of the "folk metal" acts on occasion but generally find it to be gimmicky and lacking in artistic substance.

I also listen to a lot of jazz, country, reggae, and Irish folk.

In rough order of how often I play them:

  • Classic ('50s/'60s) Oldies: Elvis, Beach Boys, The Seekers, Four Seasons, Petula Clark
  • Country & Western: Crystal Gayle, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Joe Diffie, Statler Brothers, Lee Ann Womack
  • '70s/'80s/'90s Pop: The Association, Judy Collins, Dan Fogelberg, Bonnie Tyler, Elton John, 'N Sync (lots of overlap here with #1)
  • Contemporary Christian: Twila Paris, Al Denson, Degarmo & Key
  • Southern Gospel: Greater Vision, Gaither Vocal Band
  • Movie Soundtracks: Titanic, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Sister Act, That Thing You Do

Those are the basics, but I'll occasionally work in some classical Beethoven and similar as well.
