Wonder Woman (2017 Film)
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:49:52 pm »
Saw the new Wonder Woman in the theater this past Sunday afternoon. I thought it was very well done. There are many possible ways (in my mind) for such a film to run into the weeds...e. g., hyperfeminism on the one hand and masculine overprotectiveness on the other. I thought that the filmmakers did a very good job of finding a path which honored many of these polar opposites without weighing in too heavily on one side or the other.

Gal Gadot's Diana is a formidable warrior, and at the same time very much a lady. The Amazonian milieu of Themyscira is well realized and even believable, at least in the comic book sense. The villains are satisfyingly evil and the plot, while definitely something from a comic book, is not so very far from plausibility as to endanger the willing suspension of disbelief. I will say, though, that the only-in-the-movies over the top battle scenes, with accompanying mega-amped sound track, are overdone to the point of distraction. Of course, that's much of what audiences for these kinds of films are looking for these days.

4 of 5 stars----Eric.

I'm actually really happy to hear this, because lately I've been super disappointed in films and media that the feminist internet goes nuts over. They almost always are hamfisted and I spend most of my time rolling my eyes and going UGH, because even if I agree with the politics, I hate it when it's basically painted on an anvil and dropped on my head. (And if I don't agree with the point being made then it's 10x as annoying.)

So to hear that Wonder Woman isn't hamfisted, especially considering the reaction from the feminist internet, makes me very happy, as I was super excited for it when the trailer dropped and also so worried it was going to be ruined. I mean, DC cinematic universe has not had a good track record so far. (Doesn't change that we likely won't be seeing it until it's out of theatres, because money, but still.)

In My Opinion, anytime that you have a movie that is recommended by "the feminist internet" and, at the very same time, by conservative icon Ted Baehr's Movieguide and the National Catholic Register, I think you've really got something.

Saw the new Wonder Woman....

Quote from Gal Gadot in the Hollywood Reporter, May 31st issue:

"Wonder Woman can be very charming and warm and have so much compassion and love for the world. She can be soft and naive. At the same time, she just happens to be this demigoddess who can beat the shit out of you and can be a super badass and smart and confident...."

Edited to remove redundant quote.
